Broadband Terminologies and Equipment.

Hi everyone,

I'm a newcomer to this broadband world. One thing that always astound me is that, nobody explains what is needed for broadband to work (most sites talk about getting the connection, but not the things required). I'm planning to get a ADSL connection from my ISP. My ISP says they can connect, but won't provide the hardware. I have asked their tech-support, but got no replies.

What do i need exactly for broadband access in my PC? What is a "card" as seen in my local store(e.g. Aztech DSL900E /without card)? What is PPPoA and PPPoE? What is this ethernet connection and ATM connection on a ADSL line?

I'm sorry that i'm not making much sense here, but in truth i'm quite confused with all these things especially the lingo used.

First find out who your ISP is.
Second, find out which DSL modem is compatible.

check DSLReports.com
they have a lot of links to FAQ you should read.
Get a basic understanding of the terms.

Things to remember
--------------------
DONT buy Internal modems!!!
DONT buy EXTERNAL USB modems!!! If you have a choice.

1) If your ISP does not know the difference between PPPoE or PPPoA you will have a problem down the road.

2) PPPoA = PPPoverATM
PPPoE = PPPoverEthernet

What these two refer to is the encapsulation on the wire. You should not have to wory about these two as all you really care or need to care about is the ethernet port on the router (the one into which you plug in your network).

Demand a Cisco 675 external modem/router. If your ISP doesn't provide them or their equipment is not compatible, get a different ISP.🙂 If you have that little pup, you can setup switches and plug in all the computers your heart desires.
