So lately I see a lot of posts asking the same questions. network priority, quality of service...

I'm a networking nub with dsl, I play fps games that needs good latency, but I also download 24/7 and it hogs my bandwidth..... so my connection chokes, and i get out-fragged 0 to 23 :(

So what are you doing to tackle this problem? D-Link's DGL routers with gamefuel technology? Hacked linksys wrt series routers? or others?

Which one is easier (to set up)? which one is better? which one is the cheapest? post it here please...

cisco 1700's are modular access routers designed for small to medium sized businesses.
i just checked the price, it's gonna run me 500+ on a new unit.

i won't even say what 12000 gsr is made for and how much it cost.

this post is to provide realistic solutions for people with broadband (dsl/cable) connections that use a broadband router, you know, the kind with a web control panel, not a real ios/nos. can we not be elitists here? =/

I'd say spare computer + two NICs + linux = homemade router with QoS support FTW.

Then again, the amount of effort require to set that up might be worth $500 to avoid. Of course if you can't afford $500....

Oh yeah, D-Link has a 4-port load-balancing router with QoS support. (DI-LB604) It has a lot of other bells and whistles -- two WAN ports, (hey, load balancing has to balance something) built in VPN -- but it only runs in the area of $180. I've heard very little on it though, other than it works about as well as other D-Link products. Take that as you will.

Get a wireless NIC, connect to a unsecured local network, and use that for downloading?

Edit: Turns out to be no joke in some places -- I now see that you can be criminally charged for doing this (some have been). I'm not going to argue about the law or politics in this case, just point out that it's not a good idea to get yourself charged, so I don't suggest you do this.

I am willing to Barter.;)

I have a VW Beatle and I need to move furniture from a Big Old Mention (you know the old heavy big Victorian type furniture).

So if you can tell me how to it with the VW I would tell you how to do what you need with an Entry Level inexpensive Router.

Typo should be Mansion.

The solutions that you mentioned in you OP is It.

Easy? Depends on your Flashing skill.

Which one is better? As usual some claim the D-Link, others the Linksys.

I personally own and use the Linksys. However, I hate the current popular music and I do not have interest in ?Dirty Videos?, so I do not have a problem to begin with.

For business and scientific related downloads I keep an additional Broadband Account. When downloading is really needed for work purposes $20 a month is Not a big deal.

What you are wanting is unrealistic unless you get a separate broadband account. No router will correct or make your latency any better in your FPSG while maxing out on bit torrent. If you insist on continuing then an enterprise router would help you from being hacked and people "downloading" from you. A unit from the WRT54G family would be a good home level router but with bit torrent screaming and online gaming going on, you will wear it out in a matter of months and be buying another one before you advance to the next rank in your game. Home level routers don't last long with 24/7 maxed out bandwidth. To be leet in the online world you have to put out the dough.

m0n0wall and pfsense go a long way towards lowering your pings:D

Nothing like load balancing between two pirpes, but it is a decent solution

For what it's worth, no router of any description is going to help as much as correctly configuring the settings for your, presumably bittorrent, download client because the point of congestion is in front of the router and a significant portion of your traffic is incoming not outgoing.

I'd recommend throttling the upstream bandwidth for your download client down first rather than buying new hardware that may not make a difference.

it depends on the bittorrent client as well. if you're using bittornado or something useless, you have standard port #'s, but with bitcomet, the outgoing port numbers are random, so QoS isn't easily configurable. and as far as i'm aware, there isn't any application layer scanning to see what's using what.

i have the same issue. i'm running obsd/pf and i have yet to figure out how to handle bitcomet's random ports.

the best solution - don't download while gaming.

Wow, that's a lot of linux torrent ISO's you must download to have it running 24x7....

how about if you just turn off the pirate ship while gaming?

i'd have said... anchor the pirate ship... better play on words... but the sarcasm was good nonetheless. :)
