I am confused by this article. It mentions gas lines but from what I can tell they are simply sticking a wireless node in the street off the fiber cables the phone or cable company dropped.

How do gas lines get involved?

Since Fiber Optics are Polymers that can not get corroded, and they transfer the info modulated on light, they can be placed any where that is not too hot to melt them.

In some cities fiber is strung through the sewerage system, and similar conduits

The whole idea is to use available conduits rather than to spend money on new once.

Yup, a friend of mine used to work for a company called Citynet. They had robots that went through sewage pipes and attached conduit inside for fiber. Cool idea, but I think they were a little early (3-4 years ago) for it.

I dunno from what I understand it's similar to fiber optic and thats pretty goddamn fast.

Also I forgot theres broadband through electric outlets comin out too, wonder how fast that will be, probably not as fast as the gas.
