Ok, thanks for all the replies so far.

Is it ok with 1.5 Mbps for FFS games online or would the 3 Mbps is much better? Like I said before, I don't mind to pay $10 extra per month if it is worth it but I dont' want to pay if I play the FFS online games and the 3 Mbps won't help me much over the 1.5 Mbps.

your gonna want 3 for just about any online game

id go with the 4/512 cable over

Dude, WTF?
You don't need 3 for online gaming, 512 would probably just about do, a 1MB is absolutely fine in my experience.

Agreed; 25-30ms ping on a 512k/256k DSL line here. 2Mbps for £21.99 coming at the end of next month 😀

Thanks for all the replies. I wish we have more competition like some of you guys have and only have to pay 20-30 bucks a month for broadband.
So which one are you going to get???

Right now I am leaning on DSL. I checked the distance from my new house to the CO from dslreports.com and it said I am 37,140 ft from the CO. Would this be a problem?

How do I check the ping to be sure it is within the 25-30ms range?

No, 256 Kbps is adequate for just about any online gaming. What matters is ping times, and speed has nothing to do with that.

Provider?
I've seen 2MB for £34 and 1MB for £24 (unlimited use) but nothing cheaper than that for unlimited usage.
Or do you have LLU available?

I've never had a problem with cable, even during peak times. I've also never had the option of getting DSL so I can't compare them.

I have had DSL,and Cable.

for me Cable rules.

dsl was 500kbs,525 on a good day

Cable is 1500kbs on a bad day,

Fiber Optics > (DSL + Cable)

8 Mbps currently, 20 Mbps in the future. Up and down speed are almost the same. price is about the same as cable. Makes internet feels almost like a LAN (for fast websites). Check for availability in your area.

yea and its available in like 2 places

exactly. i had 40down 20up back home getting consistent 12mb/s download speed but what good is it for folks here if they cant sign up for it?

dsl will give you much lower/stable latency. Since you want to play online games get dsl. You run a high chance of seeing lots of lag during peak hours on cable.
i found that very true. when i first switched to comcast, i was happy for few months. later down the road, i kept seeing the comcast van roll around the hood few more times and that just seemed to have killed all the bandwidth. even surfing on the web is quite slow at around 4:00pm when most kids come home after school. on the other hand, at around 10:00am or so it is quite good, which only can mean one thing : this place is pretty much done as far as cable goes. as soon as our liability for the staples rebate, we are switching to something else. bellsouth sucked as much if not worse, so it would have to be something else tho...

I've always been partial to cable because in my own mind, it's faster. 🙂

I play CS 1.6 occassionally and used to play City of Heroes.

as others have suggested go to www.dslreports.com, they have wide range of reviews and cable vs. dsl really depends on your area. In some areas, cable is king, in others DSL. Only you can tell. As for me $22 for 1.5/608 (they didn't cap 384) thru SBC. 😀

I would take that in a heartbeat over my POS 3m/256k comcast. the connection had to be reset like 7 times just today. yeah, its THAT bad.
