Broadband is SLOW? Help?

Ok, Im running Comcast@Home, just got it installed right before Christmas actually. And while Ive been satisified with it (after going from a modem, who wouldnt be!) But Ive been checking my download speeds lately, and well, Im supposed to have 1500/128 cap'd, atleast thats what Ive seen others saying who have the same service. But through tests at www.dslreports.com and a few other sites (cant remember the addys at the moment) its been showing it more as 540 (or less)/128...now would this be caused by:

a) Bad lines or other problems beyond my control
b) Bad hardware
c) Bad settings in Win2k? (Im running SP2 btw)

Just some hardware that I think could maybe influence it. I have a Linksys 10/100TX card connected to a Linksys BEFSR41 router (another PC is connected, but rarely draws bandwidth) running out to a Motorola Surfboard SB4100 modem. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

try some of the tweaks are speedguide.net. Other then that cable modems share bandwidth with other users on your node. When it gets busy, there is less for you to use.

adul is right, try testing it at different times. try an off-peak time, like late night, and see if its any faster. if it is, then you got your problem right there. damn neighbors dling too much pr0n 😉😉

FWIW I seem to recall that the slowest internet traffic time is 6:15am Eastern. Don't know why, but maybe try then?

BTW, if it's loaded, remove the Comcast software. You don't need it, and I found it slowed things down. At least, things started going much zippier when I got all the nonsense cleaned from my hd.

My guess would be your apparent problem is internet congestion. If you perform a traceroute to dslreports.com do you see any congestion anywhere?

Well, I havent performed a tracerroute on it yet because, well, frankly I dont think there COULD be alot of users right here...they still havent even official announced that its avalible in my area 🙂 I checked their webpage and it still says "its possible" but not there yet. So I dont know, and I did try at off peak times (read 3am) and I was still gettin basicly the same...though it boosted up to 600 at 3am. So I think I'll have to try some of the tweaks and see if that makes any difference.
