Broadband connection goes down w/ inactivity

If i don't use the internet for about 2 hours or more, the connection dies. According to windows the connection is fine, according to the LED's on the calbe modem and the router, it's fine, but it won't connect. I tried to disable the connection and enable it to see if it would start working, no go. If i restart the computer, works fine. This is true for wired and wireless connections. I can't figure what changes when i restart, any ideas?

does your broadband company disable connectivity after idle activity? perhaps you can look into that.

In some combinations of specific Hardware and Windoes the Network Connection get lost when the computer goes into Power Saving Mode.

Otherwise, most Routers have a menu that defines Activity/Inactivity time span.

Find the entry in your Router and make sure that it set to keep the connection always alive.

Do cable modems have a web interface for settings like DSL modems do? If so that would be the olace to set "always keep alive". If not disregard this drivel.

One suggestion is to have bittorrent running and keep seeding for people. Another is to have a P2P program running....... These are all suggestions that won't fix your problem, but will help you avoid them.

I assume you are getting an IP address from your router. Check the DHCP configuration lease time. If the lease is set really low, I've seen problems like you describe. I would also check for the latest firmware for your router -- my D-Link DI-524 had issues, though only on the wireless side.

I know you said cable modem, but since some people use the term generically, so --

If you are running DSL with a PPPoE connection, there are often settings in the router configuration to prevent you from being logged off.

Along the same lines, you could start running a Distributed Computing client, such as Seventeen Or Bust, and have it set to submit results gradually, therefore keeping your internet active. SB should send a 'block' every 3 or 4 minutes on your systems.

Update: I checked the cable companies website, there is no disconnection for inactivity. I checked all the items in the menu for my router, found nothing. I can't access the menu for the cable modem itself, b/c i don't know the user name/password. I guess i'll have to call the cable company tomorrow. If anyone else has any ideas what could be causing this, please let me know. Thanks for the suggestions thus far.
