hey guys, quick question... here is the scenario. i have three computers in my house, on three different floors (upstairs, main floor, basement). On tuesday, im having broadband installed, and the main computer will be in the basement. Now, I want to get broadband access to all three computers without running cable all through the house, so I want to setup a wireless network. now, i have the cable modem (a BEFXMU10 linksys, if anyones curious) and two wireless PCI cards for the two other wireless computers, and a Wireless access point (a WAP11 linksys) now, to get the computers hooked up together and working, what do i need to do? i think i need the WAP to be a Router as well, no? if not, then what else do i have to do? att is coming on tuesday, so im hoping to get this solved before then... thanks!!!

allright, well if you have only a wireless access point and NOT a wireless router, what you probably have to do is the following:

install TWO network cards in the main basement computer

cable modem (WAN) goes into first one

plug WAP (LAN) into second NIC

once you have internet access, configure ICS (internet connection sharing) and you'll basically be using your basement comp. as a router.

all wireless cards should be able to grab an IP from the WAP then...

practicallynetworked.com has lots of good info on ICS

To make life easy, and better internet surfing.

Buy a regular Cable/DSL Router (they go for $40-$60).

Put it in the basement, and connect the Cable modem to the WAN input, and the basement computer to one of the regular ports.

Plug the WAP to a second Router?s regular port. Configure, and enjoy.

P.S. Set the Router?s DHCP On Router, and the WAP?s Off.

Both solutions will work but Jack's is the more reliable and trouble-free advice.
