ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico (Reuters) -- President Bush on Friday urged that affordable high-speed Internet access known as broadband be available to all Americans by 2007.

"We ought to have universal, affordable access to broadband technology by the year 2007," Bush said in a speech focusing mostly on homeownership. "And then we ought to make sure that as soon as possible thereafter consumers have plenty of choices..."

Plenty of choices on what to download...

Does that come with 8Mbit Package too?

Hopefully this ends up being more than just hot air. I live out in one of these places where broadband isn't available via cable or dsl. I've been crying about it for years to the telephone company, but were always told that it would be another six mos or so until the service was available....its been four years... :(

This seems like a no-brainer. Can you elaborate how this goes against the RIAA weevils?

Do you really think the President has much control over the price and rollout of broadband? What you should interpret his words as, is a call to the industry to do more and do it for less. Whether they actually do or not, is up to the companies.

No it means, the FCC is going to bust up the monoplies on the lines. The plan is to force the cable monopolies to lease lines to competitors at a set rate, right now cable companies do not have to lease lines, same with DSL. Right now telecos can pick and choose which competitor it leases lines to. Ultimately more competition = lower prices = widespread broadband.

You can say this is unfair to the cable cos and telecos, but frankly they have more than abused their monoplies, and its about time they are forced to change their ways, its not like they will be losing money, they will still be profiting of the lines they lease, they just wont be able to gouge competitors/consumers as much.

He had to think of something to make Bush look better.
It's just empty pre-election promises like you get every time there are elections.

Yep, at least a change of pace. Could be better, could be worse.

No reason to stay with what we've already seen.

I have to say, I have been overall happy with his performance in office, but then again, he stands for alot of the things I stand for. So I can imagine that a change of pace for the people who don't like his stance would be in order. I just have to wonder where our country will be in the next 20 years. Anyone up for splitting a large island with me, and we can switch who is in charge on a weekly basis?

I agree with the premise...but in effect it just seems like a lot of hot air. He wants universal broadband access in 3 years? Not going to happen unless Broadband over power lines really takes off or the government funds a huge movement to get the infastructure down. The reason people out in east bumfvck can't get cable or DSL is because the line and upkeep costs aren't worth it for the tiny market the telco or cable co will get back from it. In short, long expensive lines that reach few customers.

Bush blowing smoke up everyone's asses isn't going to change the core reason it hasn't already happened. Although I do hold some hope for BB over PLs, and would like to see the lines opened up...mostly because I want adelphia to drown once it isn't the only game in town.
