I think this is kinda BS, same goes for the US. Maybe its just me, but I had no problems locating most nations on a map at 14 years old. At 6yrs, it may have been difficult though.

One in five young British children cannot find the UK on a map of the world, a magazine's research suggests.

National Geographic Kids said it also found fewer than two thirds of children were able to correctly locate the US.

The magazine, which questioned more than 1,000 six to 14-year-olds, said it found several London children did not know they lived in England's capital.

But the National Association of Schoolmasters Union of Women Teachers branded the findings as "nonsense".

National Geographic Kids also discovered 86% of the children interviewed failed to identify Iraq and one in 10 could not name a single continent.

Boys seemed to show a slightly better geographical knowledge than girls, with 65% able to locate a number of countries around the world compared with 63% of girls.

How are children going to be able to get as much out of their life if they fail to have an understanding of the shape of the world?
Professor Alan Smithers

Scottish children fared better with 67% able to identify the most countries on a world map.

Professor Alan Smithers, director of the Centre for Education and Employment Research at Buckingham University, said the findings were "rather frightening".

"These results underline the need for education to concentrate on the essentials.

"How are children going to be able to get as much out of their life if they fail to have an understanding of the shape of the world?"

Compulsory geography

The Department for Education and Skills said geography was a compulsory subject on the National Curriculum for five to 14-year-olds.

A spokesman said all 14-year-olds should be taught to use atlases and globes, as well as learning about places and environments in the world.

Chris Keates, general secretary of the National Association of Schoolmasters Union of Women Teachers, said: "The constant desire for groups to produce statistics to do down the English education system is quite appalling and does nothing to recognise the excellent work of children and staff."

The magazine carried out the study to mark its UK launch and highlight "gaps in children's geographical knowledge".

Environmentalist David Bellamy said the world was still an undiscovered place for many children.

"Making geography fun and exciting is so important because it makes children aware of the importance of caring for the environment and, by learning about the world, it helps bring other people's worlds and cultures closer to their own."

How do you define "most nations"? There are about 200 "nations" in the world right now, and I doubt there's a high percentage of people that can get over 50% of them right..

Apparently, they're not too bright over there. Thats a bold statement, but a couple weeks ago, I also read that a large percentage of people in the UK, somehting like 50% or more, believe that AIDS can be transmitted through kissing.

Sadly, that isn't saying much... doctor and senate majoity leader Bill Frist claimed AIDS could be transmitted from tears and sweat.

And all this time I thought only the schools in the US didn't force people to study an atlas 10 hours a day.

Mr. Geography, you misused the term "nation". A nation is a cultural organization unit. You meant to say, "Maybe its just me, but I had no problems locating most countries on a map at 14 years old. At 6yrs, it may have been difficult though. "

I've got some nice beachfront property to sell you in Arizona man. Really sweet view and good surf all year long :)

But yeah, it is scary that alot of people don't know where the heck stuff is. It's scary some of the things I find my peers don't know about, or how willfully ignorant some of them can be.

That's true. It is POSSIBLE to spread aids that way, it's just never been seen "in the wild".

I highly doubt that, but it all depends on who you ask. You could go into a mental home, ask some questions and conclude that over 90% of brits drool and can barely talk (you get the idea).

There are huge areas of dumbasses in the UK, and of course it's not cool at all to be intelligent (why the fvck do people purposefully try and sound stupid when in certain crowds?!), but I'm not convinced by the above figure.

It seems to be this way in england:

- As a kid muck around and give the teachers as much grief as possible. Start smoking at 11.

- Be aggressive and antisocial at all times with the sole goal to be resepcted by your close firends/peers

- Grow older, get a crap job. Complain that there's no jobs out there. Maybe do up a sh!t car and add some speakers and a hifi to it. Continue to be antisocial, violent and excessively smoke and drink.

- Have a child or six whilst you're still a teenager with some sluts.

- Dump the sluts since she got well lashed or on pills/ketamine one night and got off with your mate in a club or something whilst she was pregnant

- Continue to complain about you not having any money, no prospects, blame 'the government' for there being 'no opportunities'. Take your frustrations out on the police when you're p!ssed.

-eventually die of a smoking related disease or from eating crap all your life after taking thousands from the state's pocket and giving nothing back.

- Let us deal with your 25 kids who all live just like their daddy (although hardly any of them know who he is).

We need to introduce sterilisation....

Transmission of AIDS has never been shown to occur through these means, per the CDC. To say otherwise, especially by a doctor and political leader in this nation, is to continue the miseducation of the disease...
