I would lean more towards the troll knowing the OP and all;)

But never leave out Moron because OP has been known to be off on his facts and argue like there is no tomorrow:D

You don't see how funny it is that the all powerful british navy had 15 of its personnel held captive by a far inferior iranian navy?

I don't think the situation itself is funny...actually i think it is bad for everyone but just the thought that an iranian navy ship can just say " hey you guys get off that iraqi boat and come with us" just blows my mind.

quoted from the article

"Washington said no U.S. military personnel were involved."

You bet your *** that no US were involved. You would have already heard the rumble over Teran.

Sorry for sounding humorous I just thought it was kinda ironic...

Yes, it is completely inconceivable that 15 Brits in a small boat could be surrounded by 2 slightly less small boats bristling with guns. No British Naval ship EVER cuts the aprons strings from its carrier escort...

To be fair, any mention of the "mighty" Iranian Navy is inherently ironic... :p

If they in fact were in Iranian waters then they have a right to detain anybody including those soldiers.

The British Navy hasn't been "all powerful" since after WWI. I'm sure they were out gunned (just a boarding party in small boats) and decided to let the diplomats sort it out.

we are building some new subs and 2 new 65k ton aircraft carriers. they are supposed to be the most powerful vessels outside of the US. they are both being designed to replace the 3 invincible class carriers we have now and they'll be using the VTOL version of the JSF.

the ships will also have provisions for the catapult etc for standard aircraft too.

the beauty is while the ship is much much bigger than ones its replacing, it only requires the same amount of crew to operate :D

20 March 2007

How to build the UK's largest ever warship

At a Royal Academy of Engineering briefing with an audience of over 200 today, John Coles CB FREng will explain how the challenges of building the Royal Navy's largest ever warships have been met and how the MoD remains on course to provide the UK armed forces with the most capable aircraft carrier force outside the US.

The Future Aircraft Carrier (CVF) project will replace the Royal Navy's three Invincible class aircraft carriers with two larger, more capable warships - each approximately 65,000 tonnes and second in size only to the US Nimitz carriers. CVF will carry the short take-off, vertical landing variant of the new Joint Strike Fighter, the Lockheed Martin F-35B, which is replacing the Harrier. However, as the new carriers will operate for 40-50 years, they have been designed to accommodate catapults and arrestor gear if required in the future to fly conventional aircraft.

The Aircraft Carrier Alliance has worked hard to achieve a cost-effective solution, resulting in a design that can operate over twice as many aircraft as the current Invincible class - despite the fact that the F-35B is larger and heavier than the Harrier. CVF will also have increased strategic capability with a 75 per cent longer range without refuelling. It is the first carrier to be designed with a split 'island' superstructure, improving control of flight deck operations.

Each new carrier will only require the same sized crew as an Invincible although they are much larger ships, with three times the displacement. They also have ground-breaking environmental and safety features - they will be the first Royal Navy ships to incorporate a ballast water treatment system and a fully integrated waste management system. In another first for the Navy, CVF will also incorporate emergency evacuation routes direct to lifeboats, so crew members will not have to plunge into freezing water in order to evacuate.

sounds good, hopefully they wont have to chug about on one engine like the last lot!

i dunno what the state of play is with the new subs, probably nout special.

you forget WWII?

oh wait, the USA won that one didnt they:disgust:

oh there was WWI as well, we invented the tank for that one too.

in WWII it was radar, the spitfire, the colossas (massive code cracking computer operated via valves), the commando's and the most daring raid of them all......(torrent the greatest raid of all time by jeremy clarkson) the attack on St. Nazaire.

the training designed for the commandos is pretty much the basis of all military troop training today.

they took a beatup old american cruiser, painted it up like a nazi vessel and then drove the bastard right through the germans front door to destroy the only dry dock capable of housing the Nazi's biggest vessel....the tripitz.

there were 12 u-boats, AA guns lining the estury and over 5000's german soldiers based there. and we sent about 600 men in a beat up modified cruiser, and the rest in wooden boats with exposed fuel tanks. it was an hilariously stupid idea but it worked.

You guys do have some nice hardware these days, but the RN is not the RN of say 1700-post WWI/II. The RN of that period scared the piss out of most of the civilized world. The Germans literally shook in their Lederhosen when it came to surface combat with the RN.

Your domestic subs are supposed to be pretty good from what I remember. I know the issue of replacing the Trident (Ohio class over here) SLBM subs has come up a few times. I assume if you want some more the order will come our way again since those are pretty specialized.

Hopefully this is nothing more than a political stunt by Aminawhackjob and they'll be released in a few days. We should just keep our nose out of it unless it really goes south.
