If this routine drug arrest did not involve the Sarah Palin family in any way, it would not even have made the national news. And we would not be discussing it on P&N.

But if the drug arrest was somewhat politically motivated, there is something deeply unfair about putting the lives of anyone even tangentially associated with Palin or any other national public official
under the disproportionate microscope of law enforcement.

Of course it wouldn't be news without Palin, just as the Bush daughter's arrest for underage drinking wouldn't be a news story if her father weren't the President.

Why in the world would there be any suspicion this is a politically motivated arrest? They work for the governor, the former chief she's at odds with is no longer there, and this is too indirect and not harmful to Palin in any way useful to her political enemies, not to mention the price to pay if it's unjustified as it goes through the system.

If we want to look for cases of inappropriate law enforcement pressures, we can look at the Alberto Gonzales US Attorney scandals. This is just one small, routine story now.

The Palin family is squarely in the realm of the Spears family. In other words: nouveau-riche white trash People magazine headline-grabbers. I think its safe to ignore any headlines about them from now on...

I might agree with Jaskalas, but we are burning the wrong witch. Its Sarah we are after,
no inferior substitutes are acceptable. Someone else may have done the crime and someone else may do the time.

Your logic is slightly worse than 'if the glove doesn't fit, you must acquit'.

Again.

I find it ironic you bring up the issue of "logic".

Some woman in Alaska, unknown whether she is a Dem, Repub or Independant etc, who isn't a politician (or even a registered voter as far as we know) gets busted and this somehow reflects on Republicans in general and justifies your above tirade?

Amazing!

You make a valid point. The odds are this woman is a Meth head and probably never registered to vote. Bristol probably would be better off just forgetting about this Levi character, have her father Todd off him to get him out of the picture (feed his corpse to a bear or some wolves ) and raise the baby on her own with the help of the family and the great state of Alaska (and the Republican Party)

Are you saying we need to make an even bigger issue out of Wright, Ayers, Rezco, Blagojevich, etc.? :D

My, that's weak. For one thing, the democrats aren't the ones running on a far-right fundamentalist platform that attacks others the way the Palin crowd is.

You are weak.

You are the one who made the argument that we must judge Sarah Palin by her associations.

Glad the Palin thread count is increasing. I mean we were really running out of things to discuss around here.

Wow, one minute Alchemize is posting 'space wasting' content-free posts, and responding almost bragging with pride about it; the next, he's complaining about the same.

This is a legit nest item, especially given the political issue about how the extreme religious right's approach to things is ineefective and even harmful.

While they're out cuttign off aid to nations because of their 'abstinence only', discredited ideological approach, statistics show they have high rates of problem behaviors.

Just as it was legitimate to say that Dick Cheney has a lesbian daughter when his base so widely wrongly says homosexuality is just a 'lifestyle choice', it's legitmate to note that the extreme right-wingers who run on messages of waving self-righteous banners and attacking their opponents for immorality, are not quite the 'solution' they claim based in part on their own weak results in matching their own proclaimed standards.

No need for any excessive personal attacks and abuse, but some mention of the facts, and rebutting of the arrogant crusading, is quite appropriate.
Craig must be developing a fetish for my posts. I bet the next time I post a rollie-eyes, I get a full essay.

4 months ago 99% of people on this board and in the nation at large wouldn't have been able to tell you who the governor of Alaska was. Now her daughter's boyfriend's mother gets arrested and it's national news? I don't see it. She was a political candidate on a losing ticket who has virtually no bearing on anything on a national scale anymore, not to mention the lives of people tangentially connected to her are completely irrelevant. Why do you insist on giving her more attention than she deserves?

Because a national politician who is about to be related to a drug dealer (second-degree misconduct involving a controlled substance generally means manufacturing or delivering drugs) is never a good sign for the politician. Politics is all about perception and this incident gives more credence to the news that wasilla is the meth capital of that county, which reflects badly on Palin, even though she is not involved.

More important because Palin was about to be a heart-beat from the Presidency...!
......and we don't ever want to see it happen again.

Don't they have anything better to do with their spare time in Alaska other than produce babies, shoot moose and wolves, and do drugs?
Like what? The place is fvcking cold and desolate. If I was there I"d be an alcoholic just like most of the people who live in Alaska/Northern Canada. I don't blame them one bit for living in the bottle.

Mother of Palin daughter's boyfriend arrested

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) ? Alaska state troopers have arrested the mother of Bristol Palin's boyfriend on drug charges.

Sherry L. Johnston was arrested Thursday after troopers served a search warrant on a Wasilla home. The 42-year-old Johnston has been charged with six felony drug counts.

Troopers did not identify the drug involved in a brief mention on the agency's Web site.

Johnston is the mother of 18-year-old Levi Johnston. Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the GOP nominee for vice president, announced in September that her 18-year-old daughter, Bristol, was pregnant and Johnston was the father.

Sherry Johnston was released from jail in Palmer on $5,000 bail.

Wow!

There were stories of Wasilla being the drug capital of that county, but this is getting close to the Gov's family.

This is the future mother in law of the girl who was paraded all over the country as part of her mothers VP campaign.

Don't they have anything better to do with their spare time in Alaska other than produce babies, shoot moose and wolves, and do drugs?

Wow is right. I heard a guy she once met, who was the neighbor of a guy, whose uncle knew a guy, that had a friend whose son once sniffed glue.
Man!! what are the odds of that?

Guys, guilt by association is just as lame against Palin as it is against Obama. Sure the story is funny, but it doesn't really say anything about Palin other than her daughter might have an awkward wedding.

And seriously, isn't Palin's retarded ass an easy enough target anyway? I could trash that moron for days without ever having to mention anyone in her family.

My morning paper had a small blurb on this and said that the allegations say oxycontin may have been the drug involved.

Why doesn't it surprise me that these Alaskan trailer trash folks were into "Hillbilly Heroin?"

They had a trial and found her guilty already? That's fast justice for you! Too bad all courts can't be that fast.
