I have carried a motherboard as part of my carry-on, but that was before 9/11. Not sure if the new security rules will affect this.

just make sure you keep it in it's box.
I'm sure they'll check but it won't be a problelm.
You can always ship it via UPS ground or something for a cheap rate since it doesn't weigh mcuh.

My buddy carried a whole computer onboard once. This was after 9-11 too. They just check it, etc. It was his carry on.
He didn't fly out an international airport though, they tend to have higher security standards.

I don't think so. If it's in a shrink-wrapped box that clearly states that it is a motherboard, I can't imagine them giving you too much of a hassle about it. It's not even really dangerous until you use it in a computer, after all.

The problem isn't that it's a motherboard. The problem is that idiot baggage inspectors don't know what a motherboard is.

No no no... don't lie... then when they ask you to open it and they see it's not a laptop you'll look highly suspicious.
Like someone else said, keep it in it's box and keep your reciept handy... you might even call the airport ahead of time to ask about that.

Make sure that x-rays won't hurt it. Years ago I had a colleague take a circuit board to Europe that had a UV EPROM on it. X-rays will knock bits out of UV EPROMs - much to his chagrin...

My friend carried his G4 Desktop to Amsterdam via Carry-on. No problems, except finding someone to help him w/ MAC probs over there.

:D That's what I said.... They're finally being used for what the design implies, rather than as "fancy feet".

Or a place to stick a rolled up piece of paper so it doesn't blow away with the window open =)

I highly doubt it'll be an issue. Just send it thru xray with other carry-on stuff. They might ask you about it, but, otherwise no biggie. May get more flak from the airline folks for taking up too much storage with carry-on stuff.

Won't be a problem, I used to work for the TSA.

Just take the mobo boxes out of your carry on bag and send them through the x-ray individually. If you leave them in your bag they will likely take them out and run them through again anyway.

The x-ray will not hurt them.

Make sure you don't have any tools though, even small eyeglass type screwdrivers are not allowed.

I brought my shuttle box (XPC) on board a plane, I had no issues. I just told them it was a computer and all was fine.
