Bring computer out of sleep when needed over network?

BD2003

Lifer
I have a computer that I'm trying to use as a file server. But I dont want to leave it running all day if I can avoid it.

I want to put it into sleep mode, and have it wake when I try to access it over the network. I would prefer to use suspend to ram mode as well.

I was thinking hibernate, but its too slow for me. The computer has to essentially reboot itself every time I want to pull an MP3 off it. There has to be some sort of middle alternative between leaving it on 24/7 and hibernating.

Hibernation saves the image of the memory when you switch off the computer.

When it is switched on again the Motherboard has to reboot but Windows comes up as it was when it was send to Hibernate.

It takes 30sec. for a 2GHz computer with 1GB Memory to be ready for action.

The in-between regular 24/7 and Hibernation is Standby. In Standby mode it does not save much, the Monitor and the Hard Drive are off, and the CPU is throttled down but the computer basically On.

Well, I understand standby...but is there a "wake on lan" equivalent for standby. I was access in 5 seconds, not 30...its supposed to be for a file server. I just dont want the computer on all day if I can avoid it.

WOL has nothing to do with Standby or Hibernation.
It is a method to switch On the computer by using LAN connection,

What you would like is not a matter of software or OS,

As far as Normal PCs go, when it is witched On (whether it is done by the switch or WOL) it has to go through the post-boot sequence. I do not know of a regular computer that post-boot in 5 sec. It is more like 15-20 sec. (or more)

Once it is finished with the post-boot process it loads the OS.

Windows loads the fastest if it was hibernated.

You probably can find specialty computers that might do the hardware boot faster but No matter what the combo of boot and load OS will be more then 5 -10 sec.

The best you can do it build a File server using a mATX Mobo (810 or 815 chipset) with P-III class CPU stripped from all peripherals but the minimum necessary (can use KVM) to keep Files and leave it on in standby mode.

Yes. WOL (when supported) generally works for machines that are off, in hibernation, or standby....
