Brightness level on my monitor

I just got a bigger crt monitor from a good buddy of mine for really cheap ($50) but that problem I am having with it is the level of brightness it displays. I have tried using the osd on the monitor itself to adjust the brightness level but that doenst help much considering its at the highest level it can go. I also am using a dvi converter to display images on my monitor so if anyone can present me with options or ideas as to how to fix this please do. I am trying to play the new doom 3 expansion pack and it isnt working cause I cant see a darn thing.
 
crts in general are not too bright, but usualy enough so that your problem doesn't exist. try other monitors to see if its your monitor not the radeon.
