Brightness keys on desktop

On my laptop, I can use a function key to quickly change the brightness of my display. Is there any software that will emulate this functionality on a desktop connected to a couple LCDs?

The laptop brighness control is not software driven it is hardware driven. The desktop LCD also has a brightness control, and it is also hardware driven. It is a button on the monitor itself.

You can adjust brightness with certain graphics controllers, example, ATI's Control Center will adjust brightness in the menu called Color Control. You can do that from the keyboard following the menu commands. There is no indicated direct key command or macro for that.

The quickest and easiest way is to use the monitor's control buttons.

I thought something might interface with the control panel (I have an Nvidia card). Using the buttons on my monitors would be a pain to do frequently 🙁 .

That would be a difficult task to create or build such software because core assembly language will be involved in it. Anyhow why you change brightness often? I think I have adjusted my screen brightness 3 months ago and I am still going with it.

It'd be nice to be able to turn the lights off and adjust the screen brightness easily so it's not too bright.

There are monitors that do that automatically. My monitor controls are just as easy to operate as the keyboard.

I'm sure it's not that hard to do. Almost all video drivers out there support monitor gamma and brightness adjustment. I'm guessing this is on-the-fly color adjustment, and not an adjustment of the intensity of the backlamps, so if that's what is intended I doubt the driver can help.
