Bridged DSL Modem does not work with router, works with PC though

Hello,

I spent my whole day yesterday trying to figure out who to configure my DSL modem as a bridge instead of as a router. The objective was to have the modem hand off the public IP address instead of a private and bypass the inefficient NATíng it was doing (was locking up during heavy torrenting). I would later configure my wrt54g to do the routing just as I had before. I am having strange problems doing the latter.

To summarize, my modem is in what is called ZIPB (Zero installation PPP bridge) mode and right know is handing off a public IP address to my computer (which I got plugged in for config puroposes). After i got everything working with my computer plugged in I confgured my wrt54g with dhcp on the wan side. I renewed the IP lease and it got a public IP. I thought everything was alright after this, but for some strange reason the wrt54g is not getting a internet connection and therefore is not routing such. I suspect it is due to the strange nature of the ZIPB which give public ip adresss & gateway but a private IP dns & dhcp address.

This is the IP info handed out by the modem.
IP Addresss: 66.50.61.193
Subnet: 255.0.0.0
Gateway: 196.2.62.92
DHCP Server: 192.168.1.1
DNS Server: 192.168.1.1

This is the same info that the wrt54g receives. Somehow winxp is able to get an internet connection with this and the wrt54g is not. I will appreciate any help with this matter.

Thanks.

J.Villa

Edit: I tried the same thing using a spare zyxel router i had lying around and I have the same problem with it.

Jack,

My ISP doesnt use PPPoE, uses PPPoA instead. ZIPB is some sort of half bridging where the modem does the authentication. Thats why it works when plugged in directly to my winxp box (and I am not doing anykind of PPPoX on my pc).

Thx

I am not familiar with this specific hardware.

In most cases when people disable the NAT of an ISP Modem/Router Combo, and use the device as a Brdige only it loses its authentication fuunction.

Alright, yes it is a strange vendor specific implementation of bridging. Anyay dont you see anything strange in the IP info handed out by the modem. Somehow winxp is able to get an internet connection out if it but neither of my routers or my linux pc is able to.

Thx
