"He consoles himself by reading a list of "101 Reasons Why I Love You" that Sjostrom gave him their first Christmas together. "Number 1. You make me smile.""

That is so sad... I got this peppery feeling on my nose at work now..

No. 98 is especially difficult: "You're the one I want to grow old with."

"She had a previous cardiac episode in her 20s and was a poster child ? literally ? for juvenile diabetes, relatives and friends said. Efkarpides recalled seeing the poster featuring her on New York subways."

This is sad, but not unexpected. Take care of yourself at least for those that care about you.

He probably didn't get a chance to put his name on her account as a beneficiary....but I'm sure he gets half of her DVDs at least.

Edit: Just read it...that's really sad. :( I hope he gets through it ok. I'm just glad that he's in his 40s cause I think it would be more difficult for a younger groom to handle.

I think it would depend. Was this his first marriage? Imagine waiting until your 40s to finally get married, only to have your new bride die in your arms during your first dance together as husband and wife. I dunno, it's horrible no matter the context.

I remember watching a show a long time ago about people who survive against all odds only to go on and die after very specific events in their lives. It went on to say how it appears the mind over matter principal can keep people pushing their body long after it should have gone and once they perceive some goal as accomplished they relax and give in to an inevitable death. I can't help but think of that while reading this piece, a lot of people see marriage as one of those really big goals in life that you achieve, I wouldn't be surprised if it was her biggest one.

The bright side of things: it all ended on a high note, at the absolute peak... They were spared a slow decline of feelings, the death of passion, a slip into indifference and maybe even hatred... he gets to keep and cherish her memory at its sweetest, instead of waking up one morning thinking "who's that hag in my bed?"

Sad, but true...
