Bleh, my mother-in-law came up to watch my kids do their gymnastics classes and she smelled so bad, she made me sick to my stomach. Her breath (I guess it was her breath, it got worse when she talked to me) smelled like poop, literally like poop. I had to leave a few times, and tried to stay away from her as much as possible, but I'm still feeling ill.

No, I didn't tell her. I was chicken. She's a crier.
ok, truthfully, it sounds like she has a bad case of periodontitis. does she have her own teeth? has she been to a dentist in last 100 years? gum disease is actually a bunch of bacteria pooping over and over in your mouth and it can smell quite badly.

is she a smoker? that compounds it.

maybe she has stomach problems. that can cause a smell to emit back up the esophagus.

anyways... you could gently tell her that her breath is "off" and you are concerned that it may be coming from gum disease or stomach problems because you have heard that could be a cause and you are wondering if she has any of these issues.

what did she say when your daughter said she smelled?

That's crazy.

If I met someone whos breath stunk up the room, I'd probably just go ahead and bury them... She's obviously already dead rotting from the inside out.

I work with this guy who has that exact same breath.
He's also loosing his voice over the same condition that causes his breath to stink. He just had an operation, but it didn't seem to help.

The big problem is I have to talk to this guy constantly. He's the leader in a department that I'm the repairman for. Luckily half of our conversations are over the walkie-talkie.

Tongue-scrapper + Oxyfresh toothpaste/mouthwash = no bad breath

There have been a couple of people that have really wowed me with horrifying halitosis, I think with 2 of them I found coy ways to bring up Oxyfresh's website (they make cleaning stuff too). One of these people eventually tried the toothpaste and last time I spoke with her, I'm happy to report I didn't have to stand up wind. :)

Change the diet, to dairy & meat-free (vegan). Fresh, uncooked fruits and vegetables. Also, take vegetable-based digestive enzyme supplements.

Heh, I'm ok. Bleh, I don't want to think about her breath. I was feeling sick to my stomach the rest of the day.

Ok, to answer some questions:

-Smoker: nope
-Bad tooth: don't think so, she brushes/flosses/goes to dentist religiously
-Incontinent: don't think so
-Infected jaw: don't think so, she'd go see a dentist if she had that kind of pain
-Stomach problems (reflux type problem): possibly
-What does spouse think? He thinks she has chronic sinusitis and that's causing the odor.

Her breath is like this off and on, though friday was the absolute WORST I've ever smelled. Ugh. One health problem she has that I'm aware of that might possibly be related is adult-onset diabetes (does not use insulin) that she doesn't seem to try to control.

Oh, and how she responded to my daughter's complaint: "WHAT? I JUST TOOK A SHOWER BEFORE I LEFT THE HOUSE!!!"
