PHOENIX (AP) -- A nurse who was looking after an incapacitated woman at long-term health care facility has been charged with raping her, weeks after she stunned her caregivers and family who didn't know she was pregnant by giving birth to a baby boy, Phoenix police said Wednesday.

Investigators arrested 36-year-old Nathan Sutherland, a licensed practical nurse, on suspicion of one count of sexual assault and one count of vulnerable adult abuse, Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams said.

"We owed this arrest to the victim. We owed this arrest to the newest member of our community — that innocent baby," Williams said.

The surprise birth late last month triggered reviews by state agencies and highlighted safety concerns for patients who are severely disabled or incapacitated and prompted authorities to test the DNA of all the men who worked at the Hacienda HealthCare facility.

Police spokesman Tommy Thompson said Sutherland was charged after his DNA was found to match the baby's.

Wonder how long this was going on? And what other patients has he abused?

He must have thought she could not get pregnant.

Damned idiot.....I have no sympathy for that asshole. And it further erodes people's trust in men in nursing, sadly.

I don't imagine he'll have a good time in prison, unless he likes receiving.....at a minimum.

I don't understand how they couldn't know she was pregnant earlier. Article above says she is only 112lbs...wouldn't it be obvious?

Aside from that, man what a despicable person. :(

It would seem to me her condition would have been exceedingly obvious for at least 2-3 months prior to delivery. Lack of menses, increased abdominal size without other explanation, etc. Though if she's as dependent on care as the article suggests, I suspect she was only receiving maintenance calories, which might have caused overall weight not to change much, and concerns me for the health of the baby.

How in the hell did any nurse involved in her care not demand a physical exam and workup by a physician for her? Or were there concerns that were ignored? The nurse responsible for her pregnancy couldn't (or damn well shouldn't) have been the only nurse to have seen her for the last several months.
