Well it appears they have made contact now. Nothing major, but at least the rover has communicated back to earth. More likely than not all is not lost, so given time they will figure this one out. From Space.com

A report also said that Spirit may be out of communications due to a large storm in austrailia over the long range radio transmission antennas down there.

"It was sending a random pattern of zeroes and ones," deputy project manager Richard Cook said. "What it means is that the radio was on but the computer wasn?t sending information over to it."

Software glitch. Well, if it took out the first one, they have until the second one lands to reflash it (They actually planned to do that)

I'd rather waste money exploring space than watching soldiers die daily in a useless war that accomplishes nothing and drains money away from progress and problems within our country.

The second one is landing on the opposite side of Mars...

great...when the next building blows up, and 300+ people die, we can all say, "hey, at least we know that the martian soil has traces of salt in it"

the space program is a waste of money. Lets fix things on this planet before we worry about mars

It's all a ploy to ride the emotions of the American public in order to get Bush re-elected.
