I think Trump should announce a new holiday instead, National Witch Hunt Day at selected federal prisons holding various honorary members of his administration.

I guess Trump has a lot of free time before Summit. Putin hasn't provided talking points, yet.

The more I think about this the more disgusted I am at the thought of this man turning the Fourth of July into a political rally for himself. Do your parade, do your fireworks but leave it at that. Don't turn it into a campaign rally which is what I can't help but suspect he is going to do.

I think he does this kind of shit for one and only one reason, 'just because I can' and that really isn't a good reason.

This seems to be what's happening. He's now directing all aspects of the event in DC himself and will give a speech (already cringing inside). The city government is naturally horrified and pissed that he could screw up the logistics.

He got crazy jealous of Bastille Day in France since his (insane) perception was that it was for Macron.

Truly disgusting. Hopefully this goes to the way of his parade. This guy is such a piece of shit.

Beginning my second year in Washington, I had a curb-side view of the funeral procession for Lyndon Johnson. This was during the latter years of the Vietnam War, so they had programmed the USMC -- I think it was, unless it was another branch -- to wear the ugliest camo uniforms to my remembrance. They marched with M-16s, and the sound of their pounding feet was ear-shattering. Then, Nixon rolled by in his limo -- I remember the silhouette of his nose as I could see through the backseat window. The Blue Angels flew really low over the end-stretch of the Mall within two blocks of the Capitol, and I remember I almost lost my balance because my knees were shaking.

If, by chance, Trump succumbs to the fate muttered by the Asian-American CIA officer in "Apocalypse Now" --- "Terminate . . . with Extreme Prejudice" -- I think someone should plan a "counter-funeral". They should organize a big marching band with 4th of July regalia on another street of DC, with beautiful festive uniforms, and offer people large bags of tinsel confetti to throw in the air. And they should release thousands of red, white and blue balloons -- very festive -- while the band plays a rousing set of John Phillip Sousa marches, encouraging the crowds to cheer wildly as they march by. Street vendors would serve up Pepsi, your choice of Latte or blended Mocha coffee, although it would be nice if there were big kegs of beer serving to the public.

The media should take pictures -- a head-count -- of which procession the public prefers. There would be nobody around to call it "fake news", and nobody interested in photo-shopping the Mall photo to make it look as though the largest attendance occurred for the conventional funeral procession.

I’d say I was right but who didn’t see this coming. This piece of shit is incapable of stepping back and letting anything be about something other than him.

It's possible Trump will chicken out...

Presumably Trump is expecting something just like his other rallies but even more so. Thousands of cheering fans, in front of the most patriotic background possible on the most patriotic day possible celebrating his greatness.

I'm assuming this will be open to the general public, correct?

Unless his plan includes requiring tickets for admission that are issued by his re-election campaign, the crowd could be the largest Trump-hostile gathering he has ever faced. Needless to say, its not going to be the friendly crowd of MAGA heads that Trump is used to. I could see people going just to boo and heckle

To my knowledge Trump has never really directly confronted a group that was actively hostile against him, except maybe the UN speech, and certainly never gave a speech that wasn't in front of a group that wasn't composed primarily of his supporters. His standard tactic of going off script and throwing red meat to the crowd and feeding of their anger isn't going to work as well when the target of their anger is him. He may get so flustered that his entire speech becomes one of his Palinesque word salads. Then, who knows what he will do or say.

Anyway, I say he chickens out when he realizes not all the signs held up will have nice things to say about him.

Actually, now that I think about it, we may never hear about this again, based on Trump's established pattern of saying something one day and forgetting about it the next.

The news story is waiting to hear is the one where the media announces that news about Donald Trump will resume after he is impeached to tell us what jail he’s in. Fuck covering Trump.

His attention span maxes out at 150 seconds.

that may be what needs to happen just to demonstrate to trump his base is actually quite small. once the time and place is set, spread word to get as many anti-trump folks to show up and heckle him if he tries to turn it into campaign event.

Someone should come up with a chant. Hmm, maybe something like this:

"Oh my God. This is terrible. This is the end of my Presidency. I'm fucked."
