DETROIT -- Police have closed Grand River Avenue at Evergreen as they try to resolve a barricaded gunmen situation this morning.

Two gunmen attempted to rob the Family Dollar Store at the Grand River, Evergreen intersection at 9:30 a.m.

The officers arrived at the location before the suspects had a chance to leave, said James Tate, second deputy chief at the Detroit Police Department.

A standoff ensued with police cordoning off a three-block area around the store.

Tate said five employees and two customers inside the store when the robbery started. They were allowed to leave un harmed. Police believe there are no other people besides the suspects in the store.

Tate said at least one of the suspects is armed with a shotgun. Police also believe at least one shot was fired by the suspects.

Were not sure if it was into the ceiling or into the cash register, Tate said.

Police have not been able to make contact with the suspects as of 10:30 a.m.

The store is surrounded and the polices departments armoredpersonell carrier is stationedin front of the store.

Why the hell would they try to rob a dollar store?
I'm assuming family dollar is basically a fancy dollar store.

They deal in cash, they're in high risk crime areas.

There have been a bunch of them (Dollar Store robberies) in Dallas area.

Actually, the dollar store would be a good target since a higher percentage of it's patrons pay with cash instead of debit/credit cards.

Dollar stores and liquor are pretty much the only stores that you will find in the bad neighborhoods around here. Liquor stores will sometimes shoot back, so the best option for a crackhead on foot is the Dollar store.
