HOUSTON - Oil giant Exxon Mobil shattered a U.S. record Friday, reporting a $45.2 billion annual profit despite a year-end oil plunge.

More details to follow ...

Not sure why its breaking news, but its plastered in bold on a red banner on MSNBC's home page.

Because it fits MSNBC's biases much better than "Massive $819 Billion Pork Filled So Called Stimulus Package Passes House"?

Yeah you'd think they'd be happy about this because a 'record shattering' profit also means Exxon paid 'record shattering' taxes.

No different than Fox News' "Is Obama REALLY the President even though he screwed up the oath on the first try and didn't use a bible on the second take"

As did the Washington Post, The New York Times, CBS, ABC, NBC, and CNN and various and sundry other news organizations and outlets.

How dare a company that provides the entire world with energy make money! How dare they let me drive 500 miles for 30 bucks!!!!!

Really? Exxon makes cars, tires, etc... now? Also roads, bridges, etc... as well?

Oil is low now, but was at record highs only 5-6 months ago. That just means they made a shit load of Profit then and less more recently.

Not really surprising since most of their sales probably was on pre-drop contracts and they've started selling off the remaining gas stations they owned which would boost profit margin.

if they want a real newsworthy headline they could paste up the one about wallstreet only giving out 18 billion in bonuses.....and this causing NYC to lose 1 billion in expected tax revenue; which means before they were handing out how many billions....

Wait wait.. you mean Exxon wasn't making record profits because they were maliciously keeping the price of oil high?

Well, what wasn't mentioned was Exxon's profits fell a tad over 35% for the fourth quarter of 2008, relfecting oil's crashing prices......the bulk of Exxon's profits were from when oil was well over $100/barrell if you go read and examine their quarterly profits.

I love how everyone is saying "OMG HOW DARE A BUSINESS MAKE MONEY" when not a single person was complaining that they were making money; more that it was a surprise they still managed to make so much. Really people, comprehend the material before posting your scripted thoughts every single fucking time any one person says "oil" and "money" in the same GD sentence.

The outrage over oil company profits isn't that difficult to understand especially so soon after $4+ per gallon prices on a commodity that everyone has to use with almost no alternative for many people. However that 40b is only about $150 per US resident and Exxon is just doing its job as a private business, earning money off sales.

The outrage should be directed at any corporation, organization or government branch that has interfered in some way with either cheap gas alternatives, improved fleet fuel efficiency for cars sold in the US or implementation of more efficient mass transit in the US. Exxon is most likely a culprit but you would also have to include every automobile manufacturer and just about every level of government in the US from federal all the way down to local, and many other companies and organizations. You would also have to include yourself if you haven't made every possible effort to carpool, drive fewer miles, drive the most fuel efficient vehicle etc.

It's a real tragedy how short sighted the US as a whole has been since the early 70's. People will whine and bitch and moan as soon as gas prices go back up over $4 per gallon which they absolutely will do, meanwhile 95%+ will have made very little effort if any to change their lifestyles or vote for candidates who will work to move the US economy away from its ridiculously unbalanced dependence on oil.

You reap what you sow.

Good for them, the federal government who will collect billions in taxes, the tens of thousands of their employees, the tens of thousands retirees who rely on their funded pension, the hundreds of thousands of businesses and their employees that rely on Exxon's continued existance, and the millions of shareholders who invested in the company.

I don't know if MSNBC had stuff about the stimulus package plastered on its site two days ago, but that was when it would have been relevant as breaking news. Perhaps MSNBC just chooses not to plaster news from days ago on their home page as breaking news? I guess it can't possibly be that simple.
