Got a nice 30 sec blub on CNN
"I'm sure it probably was an accident," said Webbers Falls Mayor Jewell Horn. "But we know nothing. All we're trying to do is rescue these people right now."

Wouldn't surpirse me if mulitple bridges were hit. I live in Oklahoma and there is a lot of barge traffic on that route every day. Had problems in the past with drunk operators running aground, just shocked it took this long for one to hit a bridge. I'll have to turn on the local news and see what's up.

Well, if both bridges are along the same stretch of water it seems only logical that a runaway barge could strike both. Doesn't seem too odd to me.

Damn. I've been on that road many times. :(

Remember the terror warning about scuba divers?

My guess, and my hopes, are that this is just another Joseph Hazelwood(Exon Valdez) druken mistake.

A few years ago a barge operator near Mobile,Alabama hit a bridge that carried train tracks. This caused the Sunset Limited to derail into a alligator and insect infestated bayou at a speed of 72 mph. I haven't been able to find any links that tell how many died or were injuried but it was pretty significant.

Where does it say that?

Near the bottom

Another bridge wasn't hit. They're simply checking the bridge they're rerouting traffic to, as they want to make sure it can handle the load.

MSNBC and CNN have slightly different stories regarding this:

MSNBC: A second bridge where traffic would have tried to pass after the first bridge collapsed also was hit Sunday morning and was shaking but hadn?t collapsed, Horn said. It wasn?t clear if the same barge hit both bridges. Horn said that bridge had since been closed.

CNN:Johnson said Department of Transportation engineers were checking another bridge on U.S. 64 near Webbers Falls.

"We'll be trying to divert traffic onto that highway," he said. "We're just checking to make sure it was not damaged as well."

Local news here is reporting that a 2nd bridge was not hit. Although they are getting conflicting reports from the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, the Corps of Engineers, and the Department of Transportation.
