Brazilian Rainbow Tank Problem

I have a brazilian rainbow boa that is growing pretty darn quickly. He seems very cramped in his 20 gallon tank right now, and I have needed to upgrade the size for a while (he is more than 4 ft long). I cannot seem to find anything bigger than my 20 gallon tank in any stores. I would like to find one that is IN STORE preferably, not online (unless it is inexpensive to ship). Does anyone have any suggestions or know a place that has tanks which are maybe 3+ feet in length, 2+ feet in height, and 2+ feet in width? I'm really looking to stay with the clear plexi-glass ones so that I can see him (don't want to do the plastic bin one) Can anyone help?

Hi there. What you want is called a 40-gallon-breeder tank. They are about 3 feet wide by 2 feet deep (front to back) by about 1.5 feet high. That's what my Royal lives in. 🙂

My female BRB lives in an 70-gallon tank.

I have seen the 40 gallon tanks at Petsmart...not often, but I"ve seen them. Shipping on one of these will kill you, unfortunatelty.

Do you visit the Kingsnake forums? Look at the Supplies link on this page. I'm sure you can find something...

That's what I was thinking Notfred. I think this is way the American Army has an issue with open gays in the military.

Thanks MichaelD...what about the fact that they like to climb, though. I wanted something taller than 1.5 feet in order to put a large branch or even a fake tree-like object in. Where did you get your 70 gallon one?

Cheetahgrr, I'll help you as best I can with your husbandry quesitons. I have almost 7 years captive constrictor experience under my belt.

One Royal Python ( male, 7 years old)
One BRB (female, 4 years old)
One BCI (female, 6 years old...almost 8 feet long!)

Not only did I think it was going to be a thread about Brazilian homosexuals, but this was confirmed for a split second when I read about the "boa".

I got my tank from a local Mom&Pop petstore. They make them. They call them "critter cages." They are tanks, but use 1/4" glass, so they are NOT to be filled with water. They are water-tight though..no leaks...siliconed and all that.

It wasn't cheap. I believe I paid $150 for mine, but it came with a screen lid with nice little locking lugs. Check local by you. But check Petco first. If you don't see what you want, ask the manager (not the HS kid that works there) if he/she can special order you something.

I have a branch mounted into a cinder block in my BRBs cage....she uses it once a month...if that. My Royal climbs every single day. My BCI will climb outside the cage...well, I don't have any branches INSIDE the cage...it's hard to find a branch sturdy enough (and clean) for an 8-foot, 20 pound constrictor!!

Why not build your own? Ought to be easier than building an aquarium for fish, since you don't need to worry about sealing it water tight.

Not as easy or cheap as it sounds. I built this for my BCI. and it took a LONG time and a LOT of money. That glass alone was $220. :Q The glass was just as expensive as all the other materials combined. Minus the heatpad.

why bother with a tank? just let it roam around in a room and keep small children away.

You are kidding, right? Free-roaming constrictors, particularly snappy ones like Rainbows is definitely not a good idea. Your toes will never be the same. :Q

Thank you so much. I am actually finally posting online instead of my boyfriend Spooner...whom I believe asks you a lot of BRB questions for me!!! Thanks for all of your help on those too😉

That's a cool idea. If you got a greenhouse, you could fill it with tropical plants and then just let the snake loose. Every few weeks you can throw a chicken or something in there for it to eat.
