SP is a MASSIVE CROWDED DIRTY CITY.

I would Get on a plane and go somewhere else.

we had an entire vacation booked for Brazil last year... even took a day off to get Brazil visas, etc. Then just a couple days before, the agency calls and says they have to redirect us a million times (7 flights in 10 days) cause one of the major airlines in Brazil just went under. What kind of a vacation would that be ?! A bit wary about flying those planes too.

We gave them the finger, they gave us our money back.

I spent two weeks in Brazil a few years ago and loved it. I was in Salvador (coincidentially I was there for both their World Cup win and for Bahia's independence day), a beach resort in Bahia for a few days (for a family reunion), a day in Brasilia (meh), a few days at a secluded nature preserve in the Pantanal (we had to fly in by Cessna), which was amazing, and a few days in Rio, the most beautiful city in the world. Brazil is amazing. Hopefully you're single, as in my experience the women there are very sexually aggressive and love American men. Have a caipirinha on me!

I had no problem in Rio or Salvador, where I went out by myself (I too was traveling with family). SP definitely has an awful reputation - kidnapping is very common there. I suggest you get the latest Lonely Planet and also do some research online - my guess is that it is quite possible to have fun in SP and be reasonably safe as long as you know what you're doing.

I'd also recommend Salvador, Bahia and the beaches in the vicinity.

nitelife in brazil is different than here. Its common to just walk up to girls and start kissing them. Parties last to the morning on a regular basis.

It was awesome. I was 32 when I went, probably older than you, and I am not really into the nightclub scene - honestly I was just looking to have a few drinks and meet women, and both were a breeze. Brazilian women have a habit of staring at you in a way that would be socially inappropriate here, and feels very aggressive - you can't overreact to this, as it doesn't necessarily mean much, but they are definitely more aggressive than American women. Frankly I found it easy to hook up without any significant difficulty.

I am 23. Do they really like American guys? For some reason I was thinking that they didn't.

True, but fortunately, even with a very weak dollar, our money goes a LONG way in Brazil. FWIW, I got laid twice in a week in Brazil without spending a dime on either woman.
