Would you sacrifice yourself to save a stranger you've never met halfway around the world?

I was asking a friend about this and he said that he wouldn't because while it is sad for the stranger he has to think about his family first. Another friend of mine said he would because otherwise he couldn't live with himself and would be tantamount to a murderer.

So, would you?

Fixed. I don't know why that was there...

EDIT: Bradruth, I know. That's why I'm sure they'll be lots of different answers. But, assuming you were in the situation you are in now (if you're single now you are in the hypothetical, if you are married now so too are you in the hypothetical, etc.), would you?

Generally speaking, absolutely not. The poor fvcker is going to die if he is depending on me. There are alway extenuating circumstances, though.

They're just some guy? Their death has no huge impact on the world? Then hell no, I'd consider myself much more important.

Why would you trade your life for one random stranger you've never met?

Isn't your life worth as much as his? Isn't your life worth more than his if he's selfish enough to let you die for him?

Another friend of mine said he would because otherwise he couldn't live with himself and would be tantamount to a murderer.
No, your friend has "low self-esteem" to indulge in pyschobabble. You have no moral or ethical reason to trade your life for the stranger's and are not a "murderer" because you choose not to be murdered yourself.

To make this a real and interesting dilemma you should be discussing trading your life for a group of people. For example:

"Would you die if your death would give researchers the information needed to create a cure for cancer or AIDS?"

Another interesting question, answered "yes" every day by police, firefighters, and EMTs:

"Would you risk your life to save a stranger you've never met."

No offense, but if I had kids I'd rather leave them under the care of a random prison inmate than a random ATOT member :p

Ya know... I was worried at first, too. But, with the exception of a very small few, the people here are quite respectful when it comes to VeggieFrog. A little ribbing is no big deal, and to be expected in a forum full of guys. No one has ever been mean, disrespectful or out of line where VeggieFrog is concerned. And I am very greatful for that.

But VeggieFrog probably wouldnt stand for it anyway. Her moving into her new house has made her take a little time off here, but she will be back and raising hell before long.

Cheers jagec
