Question Brave or no?

This browser Brave is making waves, claiming to be super duper in the privacy area. I keep reading up on it and scanning the Reddit, but I'm not sure about it. They claim to block ads, but then insert their own flavor that you can collect points for viewing. I keep getting the inkling there's some kind of scam or hook involved, but I can't parse it out.

Is anybody here using it that can give first hand feedback?

I use it.

Brave is using the Chromium engine, the same thing Chrome and the new Edge uses. So its compatible with the Chrome add-ons and extensions. That's convenient.

The Brave shield blocks a ton of stuff. Sometimes, you have to turn them off to make them work, but at least it tells you about how effective it is. It does speed up some sites that are intrusive with ads.

The custom ad thing is your choice. You can turn them off and use the shield that blocks most things. The thing is though, Brave is related to cryptocurrencies. The idea is rather than the web being "free" and you being plastered with ads, which makes you install ad blockers, you can choose to donate to the site of your choice and the crypto eases doing that.

Of course you can avoid donating to any site. If you choose to get some advertisement notifications, you get a bit of their crypto money.
