How much do brands matter for hard-drives? Any recommandations?

I also plan on buying a 512 meg stick of registered DDR ram, again, how much will the brand matter?

Thanks..

Brands are pretty much the same for hard drives, but your data is precious and you should get the most reliable drive out there. Opinions will vary from user to user, with some going with Western Digital (for faster drives), Seagate (for quieter drives), and Maxtor and IBM being some other brands. RAM is also important, and again, the better brand will probably help your system last longer. Popular RAM manufacturers are Crucial, Kingston, and Mushkin to name a few. Hope this helps.

I've heard some people say that Maxtors aren't too reliable.. any truth to that, compared to other brands?

Any other opinions on the RAM?

Around here (AT Forums) you'll find the IBM drives aren't too popular due to reliability.

Good suggestions on RAM, ojai00. I would add Corsair to the "buy" list and OCZ to the "avoid" list.
