The hardware:

VGA: Asus H170-Pro
MOBO: Intel i7-6700
RAM: Crucial Ballistix Elite 16GB Kit (8GBx2) DDR4-2666 UDIMM
BLE2C8G4D26AFEA (from what I've checked in their website, the RAM is compatible with the mobo)
PSU: 550w

The process:

I plug and connect just the basics: CPU, RAM, power, the power switch of the case, a PS/2 keyboard, and a monitor (the CPU has an iGPU).

I power it up. The CPU fan starts spinning, the NUM lock led on the keyboard can turn on and off, but I see nothing on the display. It stays in power saving mode.

The display is a CRT monitor with a VGA connector. I have confirmed that this monitor works. The motherboard has a VGA port.

I plug an ATI VGA on the PCI-e slot but leave the dedicated VGA power disconnected. I use a DVI-to-VGA adaptor and connect the display to the ATI card. I power it up. The ATI card fan has decorative leds. They lit up, but again, no signal on the display.

What am I doing wrong?

Do you have the 8 pin EATX CPU power plugged in? Are you putting the RAM sticks in the lighter colored slots?

The RAM sticks are in the lighter colored slots.

This is the diagram of the motherboard:

There are two connectors indicated with 1:

a. EATX12V, at the top, and
b. EATXPWR, at the right side

I am supposed to connect both of them? I only connected (b).

Can you change the input on your monitor? My new Dell monitor didn't work until I manually set the input source (displayport in my case).

Well, he already posted that he did not plug in the extra 12V connector...

I connected the extra 12V power and it worked! I just finished the whole assembly and installing the OS.

Thanks a lot guys. You saved the day!

How's that saying go? If at first you don't succeed, read the instructions? lol :)

Haha! I did had the mobo manual in my hands but somehow I missed the fact that I had to connect both. I got confused when I couldn't find where in my (very first modular) PSU the 8pin connector would start. That, and the fact that the last assembly I did was 8 years ago :p

Double check your RAM slots. There was an error in the manual for these ASUS boards. The instructions to ensure dual channel is activated were wrong.

I solved the problem by filling all 4 RAM slots. :)

But it works fine now.
