Brand new power supply not turning on????

I just recieved my new power supply in the mail yesterday. I'm new at this computer stuff and I plugged it into the wall and turned it on to see how it looks all lit up. Is it suposed to turn on eventhough it is not connected to anything (i.e. mother board, drives, etc..) I pulled it right from the box and plugged it in...the power button lights up orange, but nothing inside turns on and spins. I figured it may need a ground or somehting off of the motherboard to actually start spinning.

It's a 480w ATX demon psu I got from newegg. I know it will be considered to you guys as a piece of junk, but I saw tons of great reviews on it from newegg and decided to give it a try. Any help will be appreciated!!!Thanks

it shouldn't turn on? Well that is the case I'm making...When I plugged it into the wall straight out of the box should it be going on and spinning? Mine didn't...

thanks for the response.

Put it in the case, Connect it to a mobo, then turn it on.

That way, the computer will work, and the fans will spin and lots of lights and noises and, aaaaaahhhhh.

Plugging it into the wall will do nothing. There's a way to rig it so that it would, but don't try it. It involves paper clips and electric current. Put it in your 'puter, that way you'll know what it looks like inside anyway - since that's where it will be spending the course of it's life cycle.

hey melty,

how do you test the psu with a paperclip and heavy rubber gloves?

pm me if you dont want to be held liable for lots of 12 year olds electrocuting themselves lol

Thanks meltdown...I was a little scared for a little...I saw a pic of my power supply all lit up but not connected to an actual computer, so I figured mine could do the same thing, but I guess I didn't look for any paperclips and other crap. lol Thanks again!

Yes, there is a paperclip trick that works (think about it; the psu receives a start signal from the mb, you can use the correct lead to send the signal back to the psu). And no, the psu should not start by just applying power. It is also not a good idea to run a psu with no load on it. Some of the better ones are more tolerant to no load running, but some of the cheaper ones will die if you do it.

bentz626.... Photoshop is magic for advertising lol.

As everyone else said, PSU's do not turn on until the turn-on signal is grounded.

Take a paper clip and shove it in between the GREEN WIRE on the PSU and ANY of the black wires (doesn't matter which one as they're all ground.) The PSU should then turn on. And you don't need rubber gloves. There's no real juice going through the green wire. It's just a signal.

Don't put your CPU fan on backwards or stick your RAM in backwards. If you blow something up, please submit photos to my website. http://www.jonnyguru.com/mishaps/ Thank you.

I still get nervous about the paper-clip trick, since there is no proper load on the PSU, and the switching regulators have no voltage-feedback to work with, so they could go into la-la land in terms of voltages, depending how (poorly) the supply is designed. Still safest to use a PSU-tester that allows turning the supply on via an integrated load resistor, etc.

At TCWO I would have some different ass clown and his power supply come in at least ten times a day with the old "this PSU is dead" and I'd just grab a paper clip and fire it up.. load or no load.

I must have done the paper clip test on every power supply brand known to man and I've yet to have anything negative happen because of it. Deer, Allied, Antec, FSP, whatever.

ha you said ass clown, that is an everyday word for me! Good to see someone who gets fed up with people like me just enough to actually call them an ass clown
