Brand new modem, brand new problems. Help?

What's up people? second post, w00t you can tell i'm a real anandtech junky. I recently bought a USR 56k Performance Pro Modem, I mean this is the top of the line most expensive modem on the market. It ran me like 70 bills and it sucks! lol. Actually it might not suck I might just have some kind of problem (gotta love computers). I switched from one your average winmodems to get better pings on counter-strike source. While i'm here, I might as well say, 56gayers playing counter-strike source are way underrated. You cable folks have a bad interpretation of how small a 200 ms delay is, I kick ass! w00t. Anyway I know you all wanted to hear that, back to my problem. This modem produces incredibly annoying lag spikes. Not your average 56gay 3 second and you resume playing spikes, these spikes are like signs from hell. My dude starts jerking and everything goes caddywompus, I end up having to disconnect and then it's like my whole modem gave up. All the servers show not responding, like I wasn't online, and I can't play unless I restart cs. I'm still online because I can surf right afterwards. This mainly points towards cs:s's fault than my sexy new modem, but in conclusion, my cheap 5 buck winmodem never did this. I have the winmodem back in but I have the piece of...I forget to read rules...shit? sitting here on my desk. Anyone have any advice?

Oh yeah, and before 30 people jump in with the killer advice to get the newest drivers/firmware, already tried it, : (. Thanks.

I really think that no modem - hardware or winmodem - can create the ideal conditions for online multiplayer gaming. Just out of interest's sake, what does Windows report as your connected speed? I'm out in the country using a 56k USR PCI modem and consistently connect at 52kbps. Pings of 250-350 are usually the best I can hope for.

Maybe I didn't stress what I was really talking about too well. Ping isn't my problem, it's these spikes. I get great pings...for the short time before my cs goes caddywompus. I also get pretty good pings with my winmodem, and none of these freak out spikes. And windows reports my speed as connected at 50.6, but on an internet connection speed test it's actually like 46, which is just dandy, that doesn't bother me. Nobody knows of a cs:s/certain 56gay modem conflicts? I might also add, No spikes during normal surfing or anything but...the best game ever.

I have the same modem. It was unusuable for CS:source for the most part. update the firmware and the drivers and thats about all you can do

Man I was hoping for more responses than this, this forum moves really fast, can we get some bumpage up in this joint? Maybe there's some magical cs command that makes it allll go away, if not i'm stuck paying a 15% newegg restocking fee..

Yup, anyone have anything else to suggest? I've done drivers, control center, firmware, several reseatings. I hate to have to have to send this back.

The rate adjustment doesn't work, man that's a shame. Another 15 bucks out of my pocket just to send it back, i'm too cheap for that. Nobody else has any suggestions? anything at all.
