Brand new laptop...

Just got a brand new laptop (Compaq Presario 700 series), Athlon 1.2ghz, 512mb ram, DVD/CDRW... except I got a little problem, or question that is. I've never owned a laptop before so I don't know how the battery charging works. If the laptop is plugged in, the battery does charge (it was at about 10% when I got it, and now it is at 53%). However, it has not gone passed 53% in the last 2 hours or so. Do I have to leave the laptop off and the AC adapter plugged in to get a better charge? Thank you for any responses on this issue.
 
Thanks for you reply. I looked into it further and contacted Compaq support. What they told me to do was totally drain the battery and try recharging it after that. That did it. Works fine now, at 80% and going up steadily. I love this laptop, its starting to replace my desktop 🙂.
