Brand new GeForce 6800 problems ..

Played some more Doom 3 today with no problems, etc.. then all of a sudden, I'm cruising around Windows, just chatting with Gaim, etc.. and all of a sudden I notice what seems to be a very light and transparent yellow pattern appearing on my screen .. and then splotches of a blue pattern too.. and then soon my monitor flickers off and back on.. then basically the system hangs. I restart it and it boots up, seems to run just fine for awhile, then back to the patterns and instability. Anyone know what's going on? This is TERRIBLE timing because I'm moving back to school on Saturday and don't really have time to go without a graphics card if I have to send this one back.

Were you by any chance, overclocked when you played Doom3?

My P4 2.8 was OC'd 5% via Asus' P4C800-E's AI. Would that really damage my video card with the strain put on it by D3?

If you overclock your FSB to attain an overclock, and your mobo does not have a AGP lock, then your video card will be stressed from the overclock as a result of the AGP bus running higher than spec.

What I really meant was, did you have your video card overclocked while playing doom. John Carmack said this was a big no-no with Doom3 as it stresses parts of GPU's that were previously unused. So, you might be fine o/c'ing in say FarCry or Painkiller, but not Doom3. I hear a lot of people are frying there 6800's who did not heed the warnings and went "pffft" to Carmack.

Didn't OC the 6800 at all, just my CPU. I would feel like a real bitch RMA'ing a card after potentially doing this myself, but damn, I hardly thought a 5% OC on my CPU would damage my video card. Tho.. shoulda figured something like Doom 3 could do that :p

Cheers!

Honestly don't know how to check, I don't really OC or anything (just tried this 5% boost with Asus AI since it seemed so easy :frown: ) so I'm not really sure.

<EDIT> I can't even get it to boot anymore .. I was at least getting some video signal, now I'm getting none. Guess the card is dead. God damnit.. what an absolutely terrible time for something like this. </EDIT>

What brand? Be sure to get an RMA.

I highly doubt its your CPU OC causing these problems.

Yes, a 5% O/C on your system is practically nothing. And you did not o/c your vid card. RMA!!!

This should not kill a video card by itself and is withing tolerable levels.

Your board has PCI/AGP lock so it should have been running at the usual 66/67 Mhz of the AGP clock, however even if PCI/AGP lock wasn't on, your 5% FSB increse only ups the AGP clock to 69 MHz and the PC clock to 34.5 Mhz, which is essentially stock speeds.

RMA the card, and make sure you have a good PSU.

I had an eVGA 6800GT die on me similarly. Worked fine for a month, no OC, and then it died. It is en route to eVGA as we speak.

Just read all the posts in that read and man ... things sound bad for the 6800.. I called eVGA customer service and basically ranted and got nothing. They will ship me a card overnight tonight free of charge (not counting the 300 dollar charge on my CC) and then once they receive my fried one they will credit my CC for the 300 dollar charge and then pay for the shipping to me. Well .. so I got more than nothing, but damn, I was hoping for more from a company who's brand new card fried on me in 2 weeks.

Make sure your power supply cables are firmly in place, both on the motherboard and the card. Had the same problem. Check your system voltages, if your undervolting the card you will get visual artificats in 2d mode.

have you checked the monitor? or tested with a different vid card? try that if possible before going through the hassle of an rma.

Well, I guess I'm just not a call em' up and bitch kinda guy (too many yrs in service industry), it looks like you're going to get your replacement a bit faster than me. MIne is en route to them via FdEx. They will send me the replacement when they get may card.
