I just used my new dvd-rw for the first time, and it failed. Why? Here's the log:

I'm using Ascent DVD+R discs, should I maybe be using -R instead? It's just a straight copy of a data dvd.

Crappy Optodisc. Buy 8x DVD+R Fuji at Best Buy. Look for Made in Japan near the bar code. Avoid Made in Taiwan junks.

Burn at 4x.

Great, so now you're saying it's a bad drive... my case is a PIA to install new stuff (need to rebuild the whole PC, basically, because it's one panel for the mobo and side, not seperate).... I have so much bad luck with everything as of late. I can't buy from newegg, that's american... if I could get stuff that cheap... man I just wish. I could order, but border taxes and shipping would be a killer.

But how do I pick what speed to burn at? since mine supports 4X, but I never get the option to choose.

Also, does nero suck in the last few releases? I think it's nero screwing up, I just did a video compilation, and it failed AGAIN, but this time before it even started burning.

edit: I miss read, it's the DVD discs that are bad, not the drive? ok that's a relief, I rather pay another 20 bucks, then pay another 90. I could always get a spindle too and just make my own cases out of paper, spindles are like 3 times cheaper then in cases.

I *did* manage to burn a data disc though, but I have not been brave enough to try the same one that failed, too many coasters in one day. DVD's arn't cheap to waste like this.

Said you have bad media. The firmware in the DVD writer will provide the burn speed options. Since you have crappy media, I would start with quality Made in Japan media. You will see the burn speed table. Nero 6.3 works fine with my NEC 3500/3520 drives.

You can go to RIMA.COM and ask for a sample of Taiyo Yuden DVD+R or DVD-R media. These will be Made in Japan.

Ok well reasuring to know it's just the disc, I just missread the post thinking it was the drive that you meant. I'll get past this 10 pack (pretty fast the way things are going) and look for japan made media next time. I just went to sears last time since it was closer, but I'd have to go to walmart or staples, they'd probably have a bigger selection.

Get some Taiyo Yuden or Ritek/Ridata discs. They might be rebranded by companies such as TDK, Sony, Fuji, etc.

I doubt I'll find that here, but I should be able to find TDK, sony, fuji and other of those brands, I'd just have to go to like walmart or something. I should see if I can finish off this pack tonight and decorate the cofee table. :D

8X DVD+R Fuji with the Made in Japan label is Taiyo Yuden. Some 8X DVD+R Maxells are also Made in Japan. You will also find Made in Japan media with TDK and SONY brands. These brands will also put out Made in Taiwan stuffs. I would avoid those.

I'm not saying that ALL Made in Taiwan discs are crap. RicohJPN is good media and it's Made in Taiwan. Unfortunately, you won't know that it's RicohJPN until you test the media.
