Hey guys,
I just read a report in a newspaper that Intel is releasing a brand new chip sometime soon, codenamed "Pentium". This is supposed to be incredibly fast, much faster than the 486dx4. The initial clockspeed is going to be in the region of 60MHz, and tests by independent companies have confirmed that this is going to be the "ultimate" breed of microprocessors. Some speculate that Intel will not build them beyond the clockspeed of 100MHz, because there simply isn't any point. And besides, what with all the compatibility problems, Intel has already crushed AMD to bits anyway. It seems unlikely that AMD will ever command a decent share of the CPU market.
Micron computers have already announced that they're going to be one of the first manufacturers to incorporate this new technology in their machines, coupled with a 200MB HDD and a mind-blowing 16 megabytes of RAM!!!!! Most current manufacturers only offer 8MB, and that's only with their high-end machines.
One tester put the speed this way: "when DIRing in DOS, the list moves so fast it looks like a blur". Absolutely amazing. I can't wait. Though I can't imagine why we'd need all that power.
Boy hame times changed since the days of the 286.
