Brand New Computer issues

Well, After finally getting my comp put together it works slower and is less stable than my 2.4GHz Dell Dimensions with onboard graphics. The system is as follows:
Intel Pentium 4 3.0E
Asus P4S800 Motherboard Details
Crucial 512MB PC3200 Ram Details
Asylum GeForce MX 4000 Details

The main problem is switching windows etc the sytem might pause or lockup, or windows lose the information in them or pick up the desktop background in them or go white when switching between them (not for good, but sometiesits an imediate switch, other times it locks up completly. I have a feeling its centered around the graphics card, not only because its mainly graphics issues, but because the Nvidia drivers have given me subtle problems. I can still return it, should I? I dont game and though an $80 card would be far sufficient. I can spend $125. Do you think I am off and its something besides the graphics card or should I get rid of it? Thanks,

Please give the brands and models of all the components, including the power supply. I see one definite issue right off the bat: you have only one memory module on a dual-channel board. People often install stuff in the incorrect order, too. Ideally, you would install:

1) WindowsXP (I'm assuming you use WinXP, is that correct?)
2) Service Pack 2 for WindowsXP, which also updates DirectX to Dx9.0C
3) Motherboard drivers (you can get them from http://download.sis.com/)
4) Video and audio drivers and whatever other drivers you may be needing

Sometimes it can also be important to avoid putting stuff in certain PCI slots, so make sure to mention any PCI cards that you're using in there. And if you left the motherboard on AUTO for the memory voltage, then a bump in memory voltage to 2.6-2.7 volts may help too. With a P4 3.0E you had better have a reasonably good-quality power supply, however, and by "good" I don't just mean that it has lots of wattage.

Hang in there 🙂

Thanks,
Actually the powersupply is garbage. Its a cheap one that came with the case. Its Aspire Turbo 350. I planned on upgrading to an Antec whn I got some money. Could that be cause of my problems? In the Bios under Monitor, its putting out under 12v, under 5v, etc on all rails (ie if its a 12v rail its getting 11.79 etc) I dont know if that is normal. Its a 350Watt too.
The other componets are just a Lite-OnDVD/CD-RW and a Sony Floppy, with a Western Digital 720RPM HD (20Gb/60gb partition). Thats what I can recall (I ma away from that comp). Thanka mechBgon for the reply. I really appreciate it.
Edit:
No PCI Cards also, Just the AGP Graphics card. And yes the memory is set to [Auto]. Ill change that to 2.7, AndI knew about DDR, but that jsut means it will be twice as fast, but its still faster than PC2700 without DDR (I dont know if DDR is needed for the 3200 rated speed) Thanks again.

A bad PSU can make an otherwise-good computer crash and lock and stuff, so it's possible it's the root of the problem, especially with a demanding CPU that likes lots of power. 12V amperage... yummy! For a 12V-hungry system, Enermax units would be nice, with lots of 12V amperage available and good quality.

I was thinking that the board was built for dual-channel DDR, but looking at the specs, I guess it's only single-channel after all, so never mind my previous remark about that. 😱

By the way, I also looked at Asus's CPU-support page to verify that the board can handle the 3.0E. It looks like you need revision 2.01 or later, with BIOS 1006 or later, so I hope your board is a 2.01 or later?

I think its DDR. On the mobo page it say:
DDR400 (PC3200) Support
DDR400 (PC3200), the latest and fastest DDR memory standard, supports bandwidth up to 3.2GB/s to provide enhanced system performance. (Note: PC2100/PC1600 up to 3 DIMMs; PC3200/PC2700 up to 2 DIMMs; 1GB PC3200/2700 with 32 DDR chips up to 1 DIMM only)
So you where correct.
I can pick up a Radeon 9600Pro instead of this GFX, would it be better? I Will up the Powersupply to priority now. Thanks.
Oh and my board came with latest Bios, so I would think its latest revision. Ill check. Thanks for the help.

Edit : Motherbaordss Revision is 2.01 and Bios is latest.
