So I place an order for that camcorder above there yesterday, which has gotten great reviews and is listed there for about half as much as anywhere else I can find it that has it in stock..

I get an email in the morning then saying I need to call in to verify my order, which I do..I'm put on hold for a few minutes then get the most depressed guy on earth who gives me a yawn before asking me what my order # is, who then puts me on hold.

I'm taken back to a more enthusiastic sales-y guy, give him the last 3 digits on my CC, he verifies my address, etc...then asks if I need a filter to go with the camera. I reply, no I'll just check into that later.

He then asks me if I need a memory card that "goes with the camera"..and I say, "uh, it has a built in 60gb storage right?"..to which he goes yeah "but you'll need it in case you take pictures or something".

I say no that's fine I just want the camera--and at which point he says "okay so what kind of batteries would you like for the camera?" which really leaves me

"Um, does it not come with batteries already?"
"No those are separate actually."
"Okay...now how much is that?"
"Well sir I can get you a great deal on those actually, they're normally really expensive, but I can get you them for practically wholesale value."
"...How much?"
"Let's see here...it'll only come out ...to be an additional ....$400."
"Um....how does a camera not come with batteries already?"
"That's how this model is designed sir."
"Uhh...okay forget the batteries then."
"Okay well you do need the batteries to run it, but anyway, so the camera will come out to $649, let me just confirm thi..."
"Wait wait, I don't want the camera if I'm not going to get the batteries"

A little more bickering then and finally am able to get him to cancel my order and forget the whole thing.

Now am I crazy or is that just a slightly unorthodox way of selling a camera?

Maybe there's a reason that it's listed for half the price as opposed to anywhere else.

That is a really strange way of selling any portable electronics. It'd be like if you bought a laptop and it didn't come with a battery.

RedArmy, it could have been a clearance sale if no other sites were selling the camera for that cheap. You never know with online sites after all... there have been more than a few times when Hot Deals found a typo on a retail site for a ludicrously cheap sale.

There's actually a chain of "photo" stores that goes by a number of different names that seem to all do that.

It's a common tactic used by these NYC area camera shops. If you don't buy the accessories, the camera (or whatever) suddenly is no longer in stock. Also have to watch out for gray market stuff. A common warning sign is when the order has to be "confirmed" by a salesman.

"Sounds like this company tells you what you want to here and then later you find out it was all lies. I purchased a rebel xti after I was told I was getting an updated battery and charger when all along it is the battery and charger that comes with these cameras to begin with. I was told the better charger I was getting cost $400.00 but he would give it to me at his cost of $299.00.I'm going to just keep the camera because it is going to cost to much to return ( 15% restocking fee plus shipping and handling and headaches )I will learn from this experience and be much more careful in the future and I will never repaet never use these liars and low lifes again.."

...wow, sounds familiar...

Not all NYC camera shops are like that though. B&H Photo is one of the most reputable retailers.

I use B&H all the time. Their customer service is solid gold.

oh, and if no one has said it yet, keep an eye on your credit card since they already have your number. wouldn't put it past them to do something with it.

They are the only NYC camera shop I would buy from. Adorama is probably alright, but why buy there when you can probably get it from bh photo video. All the other ones are a scam.

Actually, if you are them, its a great way. You get to claim the lowest price in all the web searches you are in. Otherwise I promise you the OP never would have found them. And least 1/2 those customers say 'oh, I need a battery, yea I want one'. This scam is been going on for years, Im amazed some of you apparently have never seen it.
