brand new 3700+ idles at 38 C...seems a bit high

Hey guys, I just bought a mb/cpu combo from monarch which they put together for me. I got a DFI Lanparty Ultra-D motherboard, and a 3700+ (San Diego)....the CPU was the retail version but I got the Thermaltake Venus 7 installed cause I figured it'd be better than stock cooling. I also had them apply thermal grease for extra cooling. I've looked around and it seems that most 3700s idle in the low 20s with STOCK cooling and only reach the high 30s while overclocked AND under load. I got this chip so I would have the luxury of overclocking in th future if I wanted (that's why I got the DFI too). Does anyone have any idea why I'm idling so high? Thanks in advance!
 
Take a close look to make sure nothing got tweaked or rattled loose during shipping. It could be a bad sensor or bad reporting. You might try another program to check temps. If they used AS5 it takes a while for it to settle in & temps to drop but it should'nt be that much. I've seen some reports of a bad contact between core & IHS causing high temps. Also make sure the fan is up to speed & blowing in the right direction.
 
Gotcha...I'll try a different program to start....I'm using everest right now, any suggestions on another temperature gauging program? Maybe I'll take the HS and fan off and reset them too. It's odd because I use Everest to gauge my other computer too (a 3200+ Winchester on a Neo2 platinum--also setup by monarch), and the temps are juuust about the same...about 38 idle and up to 48 under load.
 
That looks about right to me. I'm using stock cooling and at idle I get around 36-38C, depending on room temp.

Under load so far the highest I've seen is about 47C.

 
oh...and my apartment is FREEZING (oil heating is tooo expensive these days), so I dont think that ambient temp can be having too significant an effect. 🙂
 
My 3700 runs 37-38 idle and 48 load max (heavy gaming) in 78F ambient with xp-90/AS5. Overclocked to 2.70 GHz @ 1.53v (cpuz) I am not worried.

Don't know where you came up with that info? I have never seen temps that low on any 3700+'s, my 3700+ running under Cool n' Quite at 1.5ghz and 1.1v idles around 30c.

At stock 2.2ghz it runs about 37c idle and mid 40's load

Overclocked to 2.8ghz with 1.55v it runs 40-42c idle and 52-53c under load

I have highend air cooling, and my temps are about average with what others are reporting on good air cooling


If someone reports that their running a 3700+ in the 30's overclocked and under load one of the following is true

1. They are lying or don't have a clue
2. Their board is mis reporting the CPU temp (very common)
3. They are using alternative cooling (water,chilled water, or phase change)

Perhaps ... I have a pair of 2600+ Semprons slightly overclocked that run 38-39C load, but in a 65F environment.

If you are talking about high-performance chips, then, yeah.

Those semprons are some cool running chips. Mobile chips run really cool also

20C is 68F. THere is no way. You would have to have a perfect equilibrium in the temperatures, assuming your appt is 68F, which is wrong. That CPU uses power, as a result that power is changed to heat and the heat is given off. It has to go somewhere. Using conventional air cooling, you will never achieve a perfect equilibrium between your CPU and air. Where did you hear this?

Additionally, a Tt Venus 7 is not really a top of the line HS (No Tt is) If you want lower temps than that, you would have to move to the nice Thermalrights, Zalmans, and Scythes out there. Any colder than that and you are looking at water, then chilled water, then dry ice, then phase change, then liquid nitrogen.

it's about 18.3C/65F in my room right now, my 3700+ san diego [stock, 1.41v w/ stock hs/f, Arctic Silver 5] is doing moderate web browsing & mp3-playing (essentially idle) @ 29.5C/85.1F. Cpu fan is running at about 2950rpms.

Ambient temperature is everything when it comes to mentioning your cpu's temperature. I would guess that the OP has some case-flow issues and/or an improperly mounted hs/f and/or terrible terrible thermal compound if his apartment is "freezing" and the cpu temp is where it is.

betterkarma4519: what's your case-cooling situation look like? How many case fans, what size, brand of each? A picture of the inside of your case might help, too, if you feel like going above & beyond 😛
 
Have a XP-90 Al w/Sempron 3400+ @ 2.7GHz (see Valar in sig).
Ambient 28C, idle ~38C, full throttle 45C (or so).

Just got a ClawHammer 3700+ from newEgg. Can't wait to "stick my CPU in your socket" 😛

-not too hardcore I know, but I'm not really concerned about OCing just yet and I figure I'll go all out when I'm ready.

In the end, it's nice to know that mid 30s is standard and higher 30s isnt cause for TOO much alarm. 🙂
 
My 3200+ Winchester in autumn is Idling at 23-25C degrees and hots 33-34C maximum. Of course it's only 14-15C in the room though... *cough* ahem. /brrr

In summer it idled at 29C and reached just over 39C on load (room temperature around 22-24C maximum.)
 
I seriously have no idea how the heck you all have such low freakin temps freak...i must have messed up my hs install ... but my heatsink gets pretty warm ...

My system temp is freakin 39-41 C idle or web browsing low tast stuff.
My idle/low tast cpu temp is 46-49 C

And everyone and their mamas have loaded temps of my idle.
CPU max load so far that i've noticed this year is 60C with a 43C system temp
60C temp was taken when I oc'd my system to 2.4ghz (i've got an athlon64 2800+ new castle? 754 one... is new castle right? well it says nc on my cpu-z) using prime95

I think your temps are freakin fine than 🙂
Or is it that mine aren't?
