Okay, I've mounted and re-mounted the SLK about four times now and everytime it boots up above the mid 50Cs and at idle it only cools to 46C. Well, ambient temperature seems to be around 87 degrees farenheit (mmm desert), but still, I have a smartfan going full blast on it. Did I mount the SLK wrong? I used retention because it'll be a very big hassle with removing the mobo and retention brackets. Should I do it that way instead or should there be no difference? Hrmm, also, I followed AS3's online instructions on how to apply (plastic baggy on the HS and credit card on the slug, though I used a plastic baggy in the end to smooth it out). There's a nice paper thin layer on the slug and a haze on the HS I'm sure I got that right. I dunno, this is frustrating, that heatsink fan combo was like 50 bucks and I was hoping it would do something better than 46C idle, even in this heat.

I just mounted a 900 last week on a 2.66B, and I think it's still breaking in the thermal paste. Supposedly it does lower more and more towards 200 hours. What is your case temp? Something that became apparent to me pretty fast is that your CPU will never be below case temp, so you might need to get that down a little, improve airflow... you have the fan blowing INTO the HS. Just some things to consider...

That's not so hot. I got a 2.53@3.06 and I had it at stock speed. The bootup temp is 52C and idle at 46-48C. I got an Asus P4PE motherboard. I am using the SKL900U. I had the same chip and alpha 8942 on the Gigabyte 6PE667 Ultra and it was idling at 34-36C, so I think the board is reporting high or too low. When I play games, dude, 60C is usual.

Update: Thanks for your suggestions. I did the whole shabang and took apart my computer, (spent a whole hour trying to pry off the retention) and mounted the 800u right the mobo. I'm kind of glad I did because it seemed to lower my temps about 2C and it is 20 times more stable. That and I cleaned the dust out of it. So here's what I did with it.

2.4ghz SL6RZ Costa Rica @ 3.006ghz
167fsb Kingston Hyper-X PC2700 2-3-3-6 @ 334mhz
All voltages stock.

Good enough for me hehe.

Dang, man, if you can get a 2.4 OC'd to 3 Ghz to idle at 46C in an 87 degree room, I want you to build my next case!

Lol, yea, its ridiculous here, mobo temps are 38C in the morning. Hehe so during the day I cheat a little and turn on the AC to benchmark better. Nah, just kidding, though I still think for an all copper cooler and a 5000rpm fan, I'm still running a tad high. I would like to see idle below 40c at least, geez. Maybe I applied my AS3 a bit thin. Hrmm, oh well, it's running 3.1ghz stock voltage now and temps are 42/38C cpu/mobo. Load goes to 55c/39c

I have a 2.4B on a Asus P4PE and it idles at 46C and under load its 56C...i have it overclocked at 3.01Ghz so it maxes at 62C. But under stock it did seem to run hot....maybe its the P4PE.

Yea, anyone else have an ASUS board? Because I'm reading temps off of the ASUS Probe program that came with all the P4B533 mobos. I don't know about the new ones, but I'm sure they have similiar software. Hrm, this is wierd, I always thought that high 50s to 60C was a little dangerous.
