I was noticing how some brand names are used to indicate products whether they are that brand or not.

Here's the ones that I can think of that are commonly used:

Coke (soda)
Kleenex (tissue)
Band Aid (bandage)
Cresent wrench (adjustable open end wrench, Cresent is the company that started making those)

What other ones are commonly used?

It's mostly an American/European thing too. Did you know that "Playstation" was one of Japan's first REAL brand names?

I always say KLEENEX but I refuse to use that actual brand because it is like 2000 grain sandpaper. :)

these people are confused and just naming brands. Nice idea for a thread, but I don't think it's gonna work.

IBM compatible (or just IBM) used to be one to indicate non-mac computers, but now they just call them PCs.
