for undergrad, there's only so much you can do in 4 years, so once you hit a ceratin point, all schools are relatively the same. the difference is graduate/doctorate levels where the ivies reall y shine

not at engineering, except cornell

High GPA at No-Name > Avg/Low GPA at Michigan

So untrue when it comes to applying to grad schools.

i think it is. Take my brother for example. He is going to med school..Iwent to his oreintation thing and it was people from all over. Sure a bunch of them came from schools like Penn State and and other state universities, but then there were a few from colleges that no one would know outside of the state.

Yeah but the only way those bad school people get into med school is by actually being extraordinary in some other way, IE having a high MCAT score. MCAT matters a lot for med school.

And I appretiate you calling them bad schools

Only in the sense of ranks. I mean we all call Harvard a good/great school right? There have to be schools on the other end of the spectrum. As for me, I'm in applying to Med School phase of things. I've done a decent amount of research as to what they look for.

drexel is pretty good. I dont know if you would want to go straight from you BS to PHD. Thats a lot of straight school and in general they prefer thatyou get some work experiance before you do that. But drexel does have a huge intership program

I think it is pretty silly... but you can't deny that having a diploma from a well-known school will help down the road when getting a job.

I know but i would prefer if u didnt call them bad schools. I know 4 doctors that have graudated from my school which is a "bad school". If i graduate from this "bad school" with a "good GPA" i can goto a "good" graduate school. No..I prob cant get into Harvard or something but i could get into many others that have great programs

Thats basically the bottom line. I dont know whats left to really debate. People who go to lesser known schools are disadvantaged to a different degree depending on a variety of factors.

EDIT: I just want to add that for med schools, the overriding factor many a time is your state of residency. I remember seeing a Florida school that said 24 MCAT and 3.0 GPA to be competitive (for FL residents) and 30 MCAT and 3.5-6 for non residents. Its ridiculous.

yeah from what i've heard i'll have at least 1- 6month co-op before i start grad work. its a sweet deal though, and ceratinly helps me reduce my debt by a lot

You couldnt pay me enough to goto med school.

Err my brother on his first day of classes got his dead guy

So the idea of cutting it open doesnt sound good to you? 🙂 😀

The tacit assumption in posing this question is that the education one gets at a "brand name" university is no better than at a "no name". All Ivy, all the way here so I can't compare, but to think that it's all name strikes me as a pretty big assumption.

Anyhow, the "brand name" has definitely helped getting jobs, no question (I've been told stuff at interviews along the lines of "judging from how you've done at the school you're at").

Yeah I mean instruction is a huge factor. Something you dont see in large Uni's is the small 10 15 20 people classes. I know that I was able to take Intro to Macroecon with a whopping 10 or 11 other people 🙂
