Braking Etiquette 2

I personally avoid using my brakes too much and I drive in NYC all the time.

I'm wondering how often you guys change your brake pads. This might be a good indicator if any of you guys out there are lead footed.

My new pads have lasted me over 20,000 city miles and it's been 2 years. It still has at least 75% of its life too.

If you're wondering, I drive a civic and the pads are nippon (AEM).

Wow, 20,000 miles? You are amazing!

The last set I changed last 68,000. The set before that was at just over 70,000.

Umm, lets see you drive in NYC traffic everyday and still maintain those pads.

I hear taxi drivers change it every 3 months.

I wouldn't want to live in NYC, so it doesn't matter to me. But in the times I have driven in cities with lights block after block I would idle my way around, making it pretty easy on the brakes.

that's b/c they drive it like they stole it. take two lanes, abrupt lane changes, peel outs, hard stops, etc. then when they hit the highways, they're slower then my granny.

It also depends on the type of car you are driving and what type of driving you do. Driving styles being equal, someone driving a Civic on the freeways most of the time at freeway speeds might get 50-60k miles out of a set of brake pads, while a person driving a fullsize pickup truck or SUV in stop and go traffic might get 15k miles out of a set of pads.

There are too many variables for you to draw any conclusions from the responses here.

EDIT And I don't care how long my pads last, my car is a POS and I hate it :| (Sorry, rant 'cuz my stupid power window assembly broke the other day and i had to take the door apart & screw it in place so the window would stay up 🙁)

I've changed the front brake pads on my car, 82 accord, once since i've owned in 2 years. Never have had to change the rear pads (shoes).

20k is very low, but with city driving - who knows. I will say that you are using the wrong pads. That AEM crap is for ricers. Get some good rebestos pads, they will last longer and give you better performance.
