Brakes feel kinda odd

So i was slowing down at a stop sign yesterday on a cobblestone section of road, i feel the breaks kinda stuttered, almost as if my anti-lock brakes engaged. I noticed as soon as i came to a complete stop, the brakes felt mushy. I start to speed up after making the turn and as I press on the brakes again, they seem to feel very soft and don't engage until I press much farther down than before.

I get to where i'm going and try to reset the brakes using an old trick my dad taught me, drive in reverse for a second, then step on the brake. No luck.

Also, i noticed right after I did that and started driving forward, after stepping on the brake and letting off it a few times, the brakes made a moderately noticeable whining sound for1-2 seconds, like they were re-filling?

Any ideas? Its been a day now and it still feels mushy.

after reading around, starting to wonder if I have air in my brake lines and looks like i might need a bleed?

First, I'd suggest you get your master cylinder checked for leaks.

Second, that old trick your dad taught you doesn't reset your brakes. Instead, it was a way to adjust self-adjusting drum brakes.....backing and braking will have no effect on disc brakes. I am assuming you have a somewhat modern vehicle with at least front disc brakes. 😉
