i don't know if the brake pads are actually worn down or just dirty, but the toyota dealership wants to charge me $44.50 to check it out. considering that i had to pay $67 today for an oil change and transmission fluid flush/change because the last time my car (99 camry) went to a toyota dealership they changed my fluids without flushing them (this happened while the car was not in my possesion), and the berkeley toyota dealership has proven to me several times that they're incompetent (problems they weren't able to fix: alignment, shocks, oil leak, air vent...) i scheduled an appointment at another dealership (in oakland). basically, how much should i be paying for someone to just look at it, then clean or replace brake pads as the situation warrants? tia!

You shouldn't be paying anything for someone to look at it. It takes 3 minutes to jack up the car and pull off a wheel, and the tools to do it come with the car.

Friend's recommendation are usually your best source. Goto a reputable shop...Pep Boys, Discount Tire, or something along those lines. Only advice would be to stay away from dealerships for cost of labor.

don't they have a "Just Brakes" out there? quality work, and cheaper than most.

just got off the phone with about 5 places, two of which won't charge me anything to have the car looked at, and they're both a mile away from my house. my car has started to become a huge money pit lately, thanks for helping me out! :)

babel translation: Yes. This works well on those, which spoke in former times German

Try Ed's Best Auto. They're located on 1931 Addison St. Phone number is 510-843-8221. Had nothing but excellent service from them.

I've seen the condition your brakes pads were in, you should have taken you own advice. ;)

Unless you are very mechanically inclined, and have the proper tools, brakes is one area you should not "do-it-yourself". We have a chain here in Flrida called "Just Brakes", they do a great job. Ask friends/associates locally and see who they use.
