Brake pads... what kind?

I need to replace my brake pads today, and I'm unsure of what kind to get.

I usually like to go middle of the road on things, but I also want them to be good, and not be prone to warp my rotors. I primarily drive a lot of rush hour traffic (high speed then quick stop, and stop and go), if that makes a difference.

I was looking at an auto store online and I can get Premium Semi Metallic pads for $15, Organic for $18, and Ceramic for $30-$44. Then there is Premium Organic (with no price).

I heard from someone that it's better to get the cheap brake pads and let them wear out more often, then get the expensive ones that last longer, but wear out your rotor.

Any suggestions?

A good all round pad is the wagner ThermoQuiet. It is part ceramic and part semi-metallic. I got a set for my truck from rockauto.com They cost $40 for your car there.

They also have a close out sale on the Beck/arnley AXXIS METAL MASTER for $29

what would you say your driving style is like? is brake dust a problem?

I'm a spirited driver, who likes to be hard on the cars at times but for 75% of the time i'm just a stop and go in the middle of the traffic driver. I dont mind brake dust and i went with Hawks HPS pads for about $60 a set.

Ceramic will be quiet and not have dust. It's a great everyday pad. These kinds of pads would not be suited for track duty. Too many people buy track pads for the street thinking they must be better. They never get them to proper temp for stopping, end up covering their cars in dust, and demolishing their rotors.

I drive very aggressively and go off and screw around a lot with my car. I run HPS pads...if I brought my car to the track I'd swap them out with something more aggressive. They do have dust, but it's very low for a pad that performs at their level.

Many people think they are driving much more harder than they do. I am lucky to get 10k miles out of my tires and get aligned sometimes 3 times in a year with constant rotations.

It's not that the ceramics won't have dust; it's that the dust won't be black or brown.

I swapped in ceramics on my 2004 V6 Accord coupe when they needed to be changed and it made me most happy that my alloy wheels didn't have the black/brown dust on them after a week's worth of driving.

Yeah, I went ahead and got the ceramics. They were about $30 and seem to work really well.

I have some nice white rims on mine, and they always get covered in black dust after even less than a week of driving. They are a PITA to clean. I'll have to see what they do now that I have ceramic pads.
