Brake Pad replacement Question

Greetings AT Garage folk,

I have a 2003 Honda Civic Ex and I have a question about replacing the pads. I had my car jacked up today and I was trying to remove the brake caliper bolt for some reason the little 12mm bolt(s) (since there are two) wouldn't come out. There looks like there is some kind of bolt sleeve next to it (see picture) that is turning along with it when I try to loosen it, but not matter how many times I turn the bolt it remains in place. I've used a some thread loosener on the bolts and they move, but they do not want to come off. I called a mechanic and they told me that I have to clamp down that bolt-sleeve looking thing (finger touching in picture) before I turn the bolt, but every video/manual I read says nothing about this. Any help guys? I've been at it for hours and I know it should only take 30 min max. Thanks in advance.

Just use either an open end wrench that will fit the two flat sides or use a pair of needle nose pliers or needle nose vice grip pliers to hold it... Most of the time I have used a 1/2" drive impact and it zips them out...

That's the slide pin. But yea I agree, I would probably just hook up some vice grips on to the head (not the rubber boot).

You sure it's a 12? The bolt looks a little rounded but it might just be the pic 😛

That's because I've almost stripped it 🙁

I have a C-clamp. Can I use that to hold it in place? It's a little unorthodox, but I think it would fit over it.

Use the open end of a wrench or get an adjustable wrench. You can get a tiny adjustable wrench at harbor freight for a buck or two. Don't use the wrong tool for the job unless you are really sure that it will work.. or you may find that you've created more work than you started with!!

I completely agree with this, but AFAIK there isn't a specific tool made for holding slide pins while you try to remove stubborn caliper bolts.

Anything that will give you a firm grip on the head of the pin should do. If the c-clamp fits, I suppose you could try it. But a simple pair of pliers like Bartman had mentioned should do the trick, seems like a tool that every household would have.

If you are wanting to remove the caliper from the vehicle, that is not the correct bolt. That is the caliper slide pin, and does not need to be fooled with to change the pads. The caliper bolts are a bit larger than that.
