Brake Job price seems too high

I called 3 places in town to see about getting my brake pads replaced. I would do it myself but I don't have a place to do it, and the apartment complex does not allow repairs like that in the parking lot.

Just replacing 4 brake pads (the cheapest they offer) on my car they quoted me $218, $210, and $210. No rotor turning, no nothing. Just brake pads, I made that very clear. With the rotor turning, it was about $290.
Is that a high price?

Just do it in a parking lot somewhere. Brakes are about the easiest thing to replace. But I'd say those prices are about average. Especially if they ofer lifetime warranties or something.

Replacing 4-wheel disk brakes.
I priced the pads. I can get everything I need for around $40.
Perhaps because it's a Volvo? Everything seems to be twice the normal price for my car.

That price isn't far off. Consider that the book probably calls a minimum of 30 minutes per wheel at $80/hr plus parts.

Most of those have fine print that says it doesn't include the hardware. Or the ones for Brake Pads for $69.99 say it doesn't include installation.

Either way they try to screw you with semi-false advertising.

i agree. easy to do, but you're still looking about 100-120 in labor.

So you can't do it in the apartment parking lot, how about down the block in another lot? I've done work no my car in a church parking lot across the street. It was a weekday evening, so nobody was using it. No problems. :)

The price seems about right depend which type of car you have. The pads only cost around $100 or more. If you think that's bad, my dealer quoted my $1200 to replace the brakes on my BMW.

I've always done my own brake pads, even in the middle of winter, even when the caliper bolts were all stripped and lousy, and I've always had to do them in a parking lot or the side of the street. They're not too bad, and I can't believe anyone, ever, would pay that much for a brake job on an econobox.

Heck, I replaced my pads and rotors, all four wheels, on my MR2 for under $75, and with quality parts too. Granted, it involved some dealings that Rossman himself would be proud of...

^^Agree

I replaced shocks, struts, strut mounts, ball joints, wheel bearings, inner + outer tie rods, front brakes, and coil springs on my Trans Am over 4 or so weekends in the summer....in a back corner of the parking lot at work.

If anything, the pressure was on not to screw anything up, because I don't think they'd have been happy to find a broken car in their lot on Monday...

That's about average. My Uncle paid $850 for front and rear brakes ( all disc brakes, no drums ) Ouch.
