Info Brake issues

I have a 2008 Ford Escape AWD that the brakes went out on almost 4 weeks ago (I had a little brake when I pumped them up). I've been waiting on my mechanic to come fix them but he's been "busy". My brake fluid still looks full so I went out the other day to see if I could pump up my brakes still yet to drive it to a shop to get fixed and as I pushed in the brake pedal there was a single thump, which sounded like it was under the hood, everytime I pushed it in. My car was in park so was not moving. What could the thump be and would it be safe to drive 15 miles to a shop?

There is no telling what the thump could be. Did you look under the hood?
No do not drive a car with defective brakes. You may kill yourself or some innocent person(s). Get it towed to a repair shop.

Agree with pcgeek. Do not drive with defective brakes because if something happens, you are absolutely liable for it and the damage you cause to other people or property.

More than likely your master cylinder has something wrong with it, but if there is still liquid in the system, then it isn't a leak. When the car is off and the master cylinder is working correctly (and the system is bled appropriately and has fluid in it) then you should only be able to pump the brakes once or twice before the pedal is too hard to press down. Turning the car on should re-activate the power assist and allow you to press the pedal down again.
