Brain Cells Fused with Computer Chip

The line between living organisms and machines has just become a whole lot blurrier. European researchers have developed "neuro-chips" in which living brain cells and silicon circuits are coupled together.

The achievement could one day enable the creation of sophisticated neural prostheses to treat neurological disorders or the development of organic computers that crunch numbers using living neurons.

To create the neuro-chip, researchers squeezed more than 16,000 electronic transistors and hundreds of capacitors onto a silicon chip just 1 millimeter square in size.

They used special proteins found in the brain to glue brain cells, called neurons, onto the chip. However, the proteins acted as more than just a simple adhesive.

"They also provided the link between ionic channels of the neurons and semiconductor material in a way that neural electrical signals could be passed to the silicon chip," said study team member Stefano Vassanelli from the University of Padua in Italy.

Edit: Whoa, check the pics out.. creepy.

I get the idea that this is how the ficticious Borg were created. Some kind of experimental merging of organic and inorganic computer components that developed a will of its own.

You realize you'd best have a separate computer then, cause that's all that's going to be on the mentally-controlled PC.😛

the real question is whether having computers in our heads will make humans smarter or dumber. The human brain just isn't hardwired to do simple math calculations, despite being able to do much harder things like face recognition.

If somehow we can access these things like an extra organ (eg like a sensory organ) I think it would definitely help. Some memory upgrades/math processor/wireless link would be totally awesome (as long as they don't make you look grotesque(images of the Borg and coutless other cyborg comes to mind...))

I wonder how long before we see used implants on Ebay? Maybe something with the image of Jesus burned on the chip?
